  1. Latest world cup results & standing show SA, Oz & Gbr dominate top ten elite mens results & standings, with Nzl there as well. (SA first, but only if we make Peetie an honourary dutchman). The Euro's are scratching & the yanks not even close. Add that to the results of Burry (& the rest) in XC and SA is currently one of the top mtb racing nations. Roadies, catch up.
  2. TimW thanks for the comprehensive & frank response. You have answered all my concerns.
  3. Turn you foot sharply by moving your heal away from the bike. As Holy said, keep a bit of speed and practice.
  4. In the past clubs organised events on a non profit basis. That's no longer the case (partly because few cyclists offer their help for free) and the big clubs operate like businesses, so the Roag/club debate should really just be a question of who offers their "customers" more. The more pertient debate is whether Roag will stifle competition. Roag assists event organisers and cyclists by cutting out the need to duplicate the collection of rider info, and does it in a very user friendly way. They also allow a mechanism for cheap licencing. I think seeded starts will soon become essential, as they ar in canoeing. That's all good. No question, I have registered with Roag [no 3132] (although I still licence through my club, which offers stuff that Roag does not) What may not be all good is the possibility (and I don't know the facts - TimW ???) that organisers have to use the Mr Price timing system, or other profit driven services, to be part of Roag and the possibility that only Roag races will be seeding events for other Roag races. If organisers are forced to use one system/service, or their races excluded as seeding events for the big races, that creates the same position as the Winning Time/Argus/94,7 cartel. Race numbers are important for the profitability of races, making a race a seeding event for other races increases numbers. Creating a seeding series that forces organisers to use only one timing system or other profit based service provider may take away the profit which smaller races rely on (many run on a shoesting budget & use "Elite Timing" which I understand is cheapr than Mr P). This could threaten the great situation which we presently have in Kzn, where there is a quality mtb race virtually every weekend. My experience has been that Roag, Mr P timing etc offer excellent service. I don't doubt that Roag has good intentions, but worry that Dr Frankenstien did too. TimW, you offered to hide nothing: can races get on the Roag seeding system if they don't pay Roag associates ? If not, how do you think this will affect smaller races ? (Are there any guarantees that Roag will place the interest of mtb-ers ahead of financial gain ?)Aicorner2009-04-23 22:45:10
  5. Not my info (I was told by a race organiser that ROAG had declined to include them as a seeding race) - but lets hear what TimW has to say.
  6. I applaud ROAG's efforts but am concerned that its services are available to only some race organisers and those races are exclusive seeding events for each other. This could result in another Winning Time/Argus/94,7 cartel. Why the need for exclusivity ?
  7. Phil is fanatastic but to be fair, he repeats himself and makes plenty mistakes (usually correct by Sherwin, when he's not repeating himself). Andy and Owie were really not that bad AND it was great to have the race live. I have to agree with the criticisms of the weakly programme though - although it is better than some other sports : anyone suffered through BikeSA tv ?
  8. Rietvlei is actually kwaat naas (quite nice) - although I do prefer my home turf like Giba, Howick, Garlick Timbers, Hilton, Cascades, Holla ...
  9. Holla Trails are worth the drive from Mtunzini So is Giba
  10. Francois from Manic also looked after my partner & I as well as 2 of our club members & was superb. Our bikes were collected as we finished each stage, a written notes of problems was taken & all we had to do was collect the bikes from the park the next day. And we didn't get charged an arm & a leg (R500 each for basic wash/lube/set for the week, including last stage)
  11. I have to ask - how does this affect the Epic Prologue route ?
  12. Unbelievable how they manage to put so many riders in such remote areas with such great track.
  13. I applied & paid for my licence in November last year (after much website frustration) and have still not received my licence. None of my fellow club members have received licences either; despite follow ups from the club secretary.
  14. Giba IS world class. First tine we rode there we laughed at the short crppy track & predicted it would go bankrupt in a month. Don't know how long it took Whistler etc by I expect a few seasons Maybe these things take a while.
  15. The National Credit Act provides for compulsory debt restructuring. The idea is that sellers/lenders have to be more careful about advancing credit, and more accomodating if repayments genuinely can't be made. It looks like quite a few people here are unaware of the implications of the Act.
  16. Apply to a debt counsellor to have your liabilty restructured http://www.ncr.org.za/Debt_Councellor.html
  17. Cyclelab Durban North has a regular mtb group
  18. The THS land to which the EMBA permits apply ends at Zimbali. The land north of that is all privately owned. You trespass if you ride on private land without permission. Some of the Ballito farmers favour the introduction of a permit system but its unlikely that this will be in place by December. Ask (Colisheen Estate or Park Cycles may be able to help, or the landowner) before you ride and appologise if you inadvertently ride where you are not allowed.
  19. Please DO NOT ride in the Tongaat Hulett cane fields that surround Umhlanga unless you have an EMBA permit. Details on the EMBA website www.emba.org.za . This may sound unfriendly but is has taken ages to get permission to ride in the cane (its all private land) and this will be withdrawn if the mtb community as a whole can't be persuaded adhere to Tongaat Hulett's rules. The club that issues your permit will give you details of group rides. Make sure you visit Giba Gorge while you are down here, its seriously worth a visit, R30 a day - www.gibagorge.co.za (well worth the drive to Hillcrest) There is also public mtb available at Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve & Killarney 4x4 in Shongweni (and other places). You'd have to drive to ride from Umhlanga, ask if you want details & I will post.
  20. Plenty of good safe riding but easier if your are shown than to explain. Ask the LBS - Winners Cycles (Gary Greer) in Margate winners@vodamail.co.za (Bobby's in Port Sheppie, there are others as well) For mtb, there are established or guided riutes at Clearwater Trails on the R61 north of Port Edward (speak to Jan, that's KZN english "Jan" with an A, not plat Gauteng "Jun") http://www.clearwatertrails.co.za/
  21. If you have to ask, you can't afford it
  22. No way this bike is only worth R500 or R700, and no way its becoming a fixie. This is a real classic : I'm going ot offer at least R725; and I will post photos when she's mine !
  23. How do I explain this ? I want to buy the mtb. I thought the collective wisdom of this forum would be able to suggest a fair price, or a fair way of determing one. I don't want to buy the road bike, but mentioned it in case anyone is interested in the 20 year old that started the rush to alu
  24. No, I don't want to sell the classic : I want to buy it. I just want to know how much so I don't rob the seller (too badly !)
