  1. Just note that you need to pay to ride at Van Gaalens. Think it is R25. Also note that there are other routes around the farm that will apparently keep you busy for days. We'll be there coming from the Westrand, hooking up with friends that knows the singletrack across the road from there. Van Gaalens is more technical, far more exhilarating and you get dirtier there than at Groenkloof. But Groenkloof allows for higher heart rate training because it is more flowing and ample passing space
  2. Mampara, I agree with all your responses to The Crow, but heat build up was an issue for me going down Sani Pass and that was with Hayes brakes.....and I'm no DH guru So there is merit in heat build up especially in SA where the ambient temperature acts as catalyst.
  3. Just a note on the Hope Tech brakes. Their are awesome and I will buy them again, but be warned! If you run a narrow bar (580mm) with a remote lockout and bar ends then you struggle for space due to their oil reservoir being quite shunky and not leaving space for your shifters underneath. Other option is the Hope Mono Mini with its oil reservoir at the top Otherwise Hope all the way. Horses of courses really!
  4. Zula frame = R16500 plus waiting list the length of your arm. But I believe awesome reviews Spaz = good and very popular in Gauting but frame will go for pretty penny, their brain shock not as reliable as the Fox RP Anthem frame = R10,000 - R11,000 riden one for over 25,000km and still to colapse under me. Service pivot bearings every year. Don't take one with Manitou back shock - pay the price for a Fox RP Anthem X frame = R13,000 - R15,000 not sure, mine is year old already Don't, and I mean don't, get caught up by the talk of comparing Opel with BMW crap certain guys will through at you.
  5. Mikes Bikes in Greenside and Eben at Westrand cycles should help you in a flash
  6. X-Gear! You are right....but these pics and the ones taken in the Drakensberg that was also posted lately are enough to make any laptop-hugging-desk-occupying-Gauteng-resident-person envious and utterly disgusted
  7. julle is bliksems in die Kaap!
  8. I had Adidas for some 3 year and loved them. Then won pair of Shimano's and love them too. The real difference to me was that Adidas's nose box is quite narrow but nice high bridge, Shimano nice wide nose box but hardly any bridge. On my second pair of Shimanos and learned that the cleats you fit must be Shimano. The fakes seems to be 1mm narrower at the back and hence stuggles to unclip Advise on shoes - buy synthetic material. Leather retains water and shrinks when wet. Mesh helps to drain water out and dries out quickly.

  10. Bliksem! You won't find me at work if those conditions where closer to home
  11. Well Mr X better get a massive bullbar on his bakkie. If he wants to take out cyclist who commits traffic offences then he better start work at taxi's driving in yellow lanes, people talking on cellphone in traffic, kids not being buckled in, people not wearing seatbelts, women applying make up. Man he is going to have a hard time farming with this new job as "hitman of the west"! I get just as frustrated by cyclist not adhering to road rules, but then again how many other offences are committed by the same individuals in their own car? It comes back to the point - just because we as cyclist are not protected from the elements, doesn't mean that you can aim at us! So lets put it into perspective as the question at hand might be more a case of size and ability of weapon. If I'm on my bike and get hit by a car cause the driver was irritated with cyclists and argued that hitting a cyclist will cause less damage to his car and at the same point send a "message" to other cyclist. Can I then shoot him cause I was irritated by him hitting me with his car and "happened" to have a gun with me? Cause essentially my weapon ended up being slightly different to his and sending a message that cyclist will take action if you hit them! Cause lets be frank - why do we swear at taxi drivers or other road user? Cause we are terrified at what they might do to us if we confront them directly. I'm sure your answer will be no! So treat cyclist exactly the same as you will treat any other vechicles on the road - cause a poephol is a poephol regardless of his means of transport!
  12. This guys on youtube gave damm good advice. Work with your belly button as reference and always keep it on the inside of the turn. Its a funny tip but it works.
  13. So I followed all the advice and all I can say is thank you! I cleaned the pads and rotors with white spirits and then sanded them with that material type cloth (pretty much the same effect as fine sandpaper, even though I think it might be finer). Worked like a charm and had no failures or brake fade. Thanks to all!
  14. I can't make the ride this Sunday. But what about a night ride? We would love to ride Breedts starting at 5/5h30-ish to finish at around 8-9h00.
  15. I cleaned both brake pads and rotors with white spirits and then rubs the pads on fine sand paper. Haven't riden bike either so hopefully everything works its magic till I mount my beast this weekend in Dullstroom.
  16. How old are you? Any plans for stage racing? If you are over 30 and planning stage racing - Anthem For pure marathon racing and your weight is on the low side and planning to race then Zaskar definitely - its got the heritage and pedigree
  17. not to worry about question on rotors - realised my mistake thanks
  18. what is a "hydrocarbontherefore"? Why the rotors as well?
  19. is rubbing with sandpaper best alternative to reduce effect?
  20. Can paraffin do any harm or cause any breaking problems if it lands on your break pads? My logic says no, as it evaporates, but I'm thinking it might cause a problem cause it is oil based. Any views or experiences?
  21. This was 15minutes into the restart. So the lights you see are of the entire field.
  22. Sorry. I tried to post this under the original 24HR photo topic but access was denied. Here is picture of the second storm's approach. This was taken at about 19h45
  23. it all comes down to setup. My recommendation is to also experiment with stem lenght. The wider you go, the shorter stem you might want to evaluate. Works like a triangle. I'm just thinking that if you go to wide and to long then you might end up with shoulder pain on long rides. I wasn't comfortable with 710, 680 or 640 and been riding 580mm flat bar with 110 to 100 mm stem for last 4 years. Its all preference at the end.
  24. Then I will recommend to ride with other guys to check their lines and perhaps adjust yours. Secondly, check your pivots and lastly cadence. I was honestly close to ditching my Anthem beginning of 2008 because of all the running repairs. But have had some success since adjusting my ride style
  25. I saw Santa Cruz make this warranty comment, but what I gaged from it is that 20mm up or down shouldn't be an issue
