  12. The chair is a very specialized chair from Germany. It will cost R40 000, this is due to all the additional supports that have to be added to support Riley. He has virtually no muscle function so the chair will enable him to sit up by providing his trunk with full support. Without the specialized trunk support that this chair provides, he will never be able to sit up because his diaphragm doesn't function so he can't breath sitting up without this support. His mind functions perfectly so him being able to sit up will hugely improve his quality of life. Thanks for all the support so far! Will get an update of where we standing from his parents and post it shortly.
  13. Riley trying out a new set wheels. All funds donated will go towards buying him one these which will greatly improve his quality of life.
  14. Garfield, thank you! It really is a terrible illness and I'm trying to do what I can to help his parents make Riley's life as comfortable as possible. Do you know how to move this thread over to the general forum? Might get more of a response there? Going to change the heading now, good idea!
  15. Thanks you so much to everyone who has supported this! Riley's parents are blown away by the generosity of the good people on The Hub
  16. Thank you Metzet! Really appreciate the support guys! See you in PE
  17. Hi Garfield, Thank you so much! Hopefully I will see you out on the course in PE
  18. Hi DaveM Thank you so much!! I am planing to have Racing for Riley printed onto my shirt so you should be able to spot me. I'm not too sure how fast Garflied is, but will definitely leave nothing out on the course if beating him will mean some additional funds for Riley. Cheers
  19. Hi guys, I have always thought of Ironman as a very personal thing. Everyone races it for their own reasons and just arriving at the start line is an achievement in itself. Getting to the start of an Ironman takes some sacrifices, the many hours out training at the expense of time with family and friends. The thousands of rands spent on race entries, equipment, nutrition etc. I raced Ironman South Africa last year for the first time and I did it all for me. One thing which stuck with me from that day was the sense of togetherness and support that the Ironman community embraces. This year I have decided to race for something bigger than myself. A good friend has a very special little man. His name is Riley, and he was born with a rare genetic disorder that has left him with inability to use his muscles. His disorder is call Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and he has type one which is the most severe. SMA is the number one genetic killer of children under the age of 2. His disorder has obviously had a large impact on his family's finances. He has large medical expenses and needs around the clock care. I will be racing Ironman South Africa this year to try and raise some much needed funds to help out his family. If anyone out in Hub land can help me support this initiative it will be massively appreciated!
  20. Thanks for the info, will definitely check it out. Other question, is it safe to ride alone there? and at the Cradle? will most likely be doing fairly long rides and probably won't have anyone to ride with.
  21. Hi guys, Might be a dumb question but is this a road or mtb trail? I am making the trek up from the Cape at the end of November to work in the city of gold and am frantically trying to find places to cycle up there, both road for ironman training and mtb for fun, and by fun I mean tough technical routes. Any advice on where I should ride?
  22. I use the Specialized rib cage, plastic one, cable tied under my seat. It is cheap and works perfectly, did IMSA this year with it and many hundreds of training miles and did not experience one bottle rocket
  23. Does anyone have any experience with Cyclesure bike insurance? I am looking to insure my bikes and their rates seem reasonable, just wondering what their claims process etc is like? Any other good options for bike insurance that I should consider?
