  4. Anyone looking for a team member. I wasn't going to ride but if there's a space for me I'll join someone. I've done it 5 times before. I am fit at the moment. Time isn't important. Last year did 13hrs but don't mind anything up to 18hrs. Just want to go and have fun?

  10. The weather for-cast is looking good.
  11. So here's the low down We're riding 5½km's further over a tougher route, with one less pit stop. A predicted day time high of 12°C and a night time of -1°C into 35knot head-wind and a possibility of rain. If we can get hold of those horns we better hold on tight.
  12. It's a real pity about the route change, as nothing beats the "Baviaans", But I suppose there is a real danger of loosing a cyclist in one of the river crossings in the dark and also not being able to get support vehicles across to him. So hats off to Wikus and his team for making the event still go ahead. It must be a logistical nightmare changing something like this in the last week - Thanks Eco-bound. It's exciting to do something different. I've ridden this route before and beware anyone who thinks its easy. The climb to the Telkom tower is a monster - in my opinion worse than MAC, especially the last km when you turn right onto the Elands river road. It's surface is quiet bad - rocky and rutted. The decsent down to Patensie is dangerous, everyone take care here. Also rocky and rutted and steep. Very exciting. See you in Willow-more.
  13. I think it's just a rumour, We have contact with a local farmer and he tells us the roads arn't that bad. The water crossings are a little deeper than usual that's all. He did the 2008 ride and says it's about the same now as it was then. We have to get perspective on this. The last 3 years have been dry years. The current conditions are actually normal, not abnormal. I think we're worring for nothing.
  14. Weather for-cast for Berg-plaas. Looks like fun. no rain. 15. I have plenty of spare clothing, you never know just in case. I always put on a complete new set of clothing at Berg-plaas, its such a spoil at that point.
  16. Can't wait. All the shouting & swearing & dust & mud & blood & drama
  17. I spoke to a farmer near the Police station, They have had 72mm of rain scince Friday. Cool water crossings.
  18. I always put on a clean set of clothing at Berg-plaas. It just feels so lekker.
  19. This ride is going to be so cool.
  20. The best lights available are ayup's. The V4 set is superb. It come with a wide angle for your handle bars and a narrow beam for your helmet. Very light, and the best mount on the market. The helmet light is hardly noticible on your head - weighs nothing. These are definatly the lightest (powerfull) lights available. Most of the pro's use them.

  22. Magicshines are good lights, but look around first. There are very good lights in that price range (R1 400 to R1 800.00) AY-UP lights are far lighter, longer battery life much brighter and they're only R350.00 more. A much better purchase. Most forums rate Ay-Ups as the Nr. 1 MTB light and they are the most popular light in Australia. There is a 10 year Guarantee on AY-UP lights. A much better purchase.
  23. I had a Brighterlights (3R) on my first Tranbaviaans and the Ay-Ups on my second Transbaviaans and the Ay-Ups were the better lights, without doubt. The combination of a spot light on your helmet and a wide angle on your bars is the best combination you can have. The spot on the helmet is by far the brightest light i have seen. With the brighterlights I ended up having a Petzyl on my head for stops etc. which is an added weight. The weight differance is 460G (without the petzyl), thats a considerable weight Total weight Brighterlights - 600G + petzyl Total weight Ay-Up 140G (4 lights & 2 batteries) With the Brighterlights I was adjusting the angle of the light every 15mins or so. I never adjusted the Ay-Ups once - again I attribute that to weight. The Brighterlights is spec at 1050 lumens and the Ay-Ups at 600 Lumens, Yet the Ay-Ups are still brighter. I put that down to a superior lens. (If you put 300watts into a Nishiki and you put 200watts into a Orbea the Orbea would go faster) Both lights are very good but the Ay-Ups are the better package
  24. I have a set of Ay-Up lights. I have the V4 adventure kit which comes with 2 lights & 3 battrys. I've been cycling for 20+ years and these are by far the best lights I've ever had. In 2008 I did the Transbaviaans with a set of "Brighter-lights". And Last year with the Ay-Ups. I can honestly say the Ay-Ups are the best lights on the market. At 70g you can't even feel it on your helmet and in the night training rides they are always the brightest lights in the group. Of all the lights I've ever had they also have the most sturdy mount. Do not move at all even in the worst conditions. The charge time is also relatively quick (about 3hrs) I comfortable get 9hrs on full beam (they only have one setting - no dim) I ordered mine directly from Australia and got them in 8 days. I am in the process of getting a second set for my daughter.
