  1. It's amazing that they used the "spiked bottle story"... it didn't work for Ben Johnson in the '88 Seoul Olympics bust.
  2. Interesting Shaun, has he put his money where his mouth is yet???? Yes I have ... How about you?
  3. Thanks Shaun, That mail didn't come through to me. I have the details now and will be in touch. Keep up the great work. R.
  4. Danger Dassie, thanks for the offer! No disrespect to Shaun - in no way did I want it to sound like I was rubbishing what he is doing. What he is doing is great, and I look forward to supporting him where I can. I was merely pointing out how long it takes to create an ground-swell. I think that it is compounded because S.Africans are largely apathetic, as you point out. The current political climate doesn't help our cause. What gets me is the difference in reaction to cyclists being killed on the road (lack of action, media attention, national outcry etc) versus that we've seen from the tragic killing of the four school children in Soweto due to reckless driving.
  5. Easy guys...Sign Up is still a new organisationand awareness of them and their activities is low. I joined their FB page and was not aware of this initiative until I read this thread. I also e-mailed Shaun @ Sign Up 10 days ago asking to purchase the bumper sticker and for more info on the org, and am still waiting on a reply. The point is that this will take time to gain the necessary momentum - doesn't mean we're not interested. Let's stay united as a body of cyclists in dealing with this scourge.
  6. I can't wait ... got unfinished business with this race after last year where I bonked badly. Entered, and may even enter the MTB Challenge too for good measure!
  7. Very sad indeed. A wake-up call to all of us perhaps? My sincerest condolences to his family.

    WTH!

Cycling appears to be like golf - all kinds of wierd gadgets crawl out of the woodwork. Interesting to see that it is the "SRAM Smartbar" ...
  9. A late post to this thread: Modderfontein Road is a great route East out of Jhb with a wide shoulder for some solid spinning. The problem is that running West to East before sunrise is dangerous because labourers riding their bicycles to work, ride on the shoulder in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic. Ride with a light on and keep your eyes open, it can be unnerving.
  10. Let's hope that ASO don't turn into a new FIFA!!
  11. Well that sounds right ... when I was at the games in Germany they dressed up team busses provided by Merc in Hyundai branding. Hyundai couldn't provide the busses to spec for the SWC, so FIFA contracted the Mercs and rebranded them to suit their sponsor. It's all about the Benjamins
  12. Wait until you see Vodacom taking down their massive billboard on the top of Ponte because it is within a kilometre and camera shot of Coca-Cola Park!! SA is the only country in history where the president signed sureties in the delivery of the SWC. So we are nationally bound against huge financial penalties to deliver the tournament the way The Blatter-ist and his mates want it. Bend over SA ...
  13. This was my first Argus too, and I can't agree with your observations. I found it to be very well organised and loved the support along the whole route. I can't understand why it isn't rated as SA's top race.
  14. Hi guys, Thanks for the info and thanks for the welcome I'll give that a bash and see if I can hang on.
