  1. I have the same issue on both hands. All my fingers except for the two little fingers have gone numb since the Transbaviaans. I have done a lot of reading on this issue over the past week and while I now understand the cause and what to do in future to prevent it does anybody have an idea how long it will take for my hands to go back to normal? I desperately want to get back on the bike but not sure if it will cause more damage than good? Do I need to go and see a doctor, are there specific medication I can take? Any help would be appreciated.
  2. Matchstix, we came in just before 6 and I am sure we came past you in that last 20km's. Still remembering telling my teammate that I feel for you having to do that last stretch without lights.
  3. I am one of them. This will be my first one and super excited!
  4. Anyone know how Lionman compares to Hakahana? I did Hakahana last weekend and had quite a tough day on the bike, did the Walkerville 60km yesterday which I really enjoyed but can't really compare the two. I would assume Lionman is more like Hakahana/Van Gaalens as far as difficulty is concerned?
  5. For a race labelled as Gauteng's coldest race the weather was actually really nice. In fact every other race/ride I did since May was colder as this one! :-) Quite enjoyed it and things went a lot better for me than last weeks Hakahana. Sure enough the two routes can't be compared but last week I started cramping at 30km's already which made for a long day in the saddle but this week did a lot more planning for the race and I finished without having any difficulty or issues.
  6. I have been a member since March last year but only made 67 posts so far. I am on the hub however almost on a daily basis reading and learning from fellow cyclists. I see myself as part of the hub community as much as the guy with thousands of posts and I would have felt the same even if I never made active posts. Just because I am not always commenting on posts doesn't mean that I am less part of the community. I get equally upset when reading about hubbers getting mugged and professional cyclists being caught out for doping. I equally appreciate the Emily Batty photos and laugh at the not so hot dismounts in action. I feel sad with my fellow hubbers for going through tough times in their lives whatever the cause. The point I am trying to make is that making a lot of posts or not should not determine your status on the hub or prevent you from using any of the other features on the hub.
  7. My first ever proper marathon and I just realized once again I need to do some serious hill training. I was cramping from 30km but told myself I will finish no matter what. Came in at 6:32!!! But even though I was suffering I am glad I did this one.....very nice route. Will definitely be better prepared next time even though I thought yesterday at the 55km mark never again. I just need to figure out this cramping thing!
  8. Hi Everyone If anybody still has a spare entry for this weekends marathon I am desperately looking for one. Due to some admin mishap I thought I was entered only to realize this evening that I am already entered for Lionman and not Hakahana. I've already missed Van Gaalens due to illness and was looking forward to this one so I will really appreciate it if anyone can help me out.
  9. Thomas, I am not planning a 7 hour ride but after everything I am reading on this forum I don't know how well this will go! I have put in almost 250 km's of training over the past 2 weeks but only done about 2,500m of climbing. Added to the fact that I have never done 75km on a mtb before so it will be interesting to see how things turn out on the day.
  10. Eish I should stop reading this forum....I have never ridden at van Gaalens before but is entered for the 75km this weekend. I am starting to wonder how wise that was!
  11. I am not sure who you can contact but I saw there were 3 and a half pages of DNF's which was quite unbelievable so I am sure you are not the only one with this problem.
  12. That jockey wheel looks seriously suspect!
  13. Thanks, I am planning to check the route out this coming weekend unless I get a couple of hubbers telling me its a bad bad idea......safety concerns are traffic as well as potential muggings! I did the stretch between Voortrekker monument and Nellmapius again yesterday and there is a very nice single track/jeep track going all the way but the grass has really overgrown quite a bit after all the rain so visibility is a bit of an issue.
  14. I am going to shamelessly bump my own post.....I cannot and will not accept that there is a question that no one on the hub has the answer to! :-)
  15. Hi Everyone Our offices have recently moved to the new Waterfall development just off Allandale offramp in Midrand. The nicest part is that there are showers and locker rooms available at the new building so I am thinking of commuting to the office once or twice a week. I stay in Centurion (Highveld area) so 95% of the route will be old Jhb road. I ride on old Jhb a lot but always between Nellmapius and Voortrekker monument, I have never done it in the other direction. Anyone knows how the route will look from Nellmapius to Allandale? I will be taking my mtb and for safety concerns would like to minimise tar travelling to the very least. I will commute with a work colleague but is there anyone doing this stretch of old Jhb regularly and alone? Any advice would be appreciated. I have always wanted to commute and this is the perfect chance, I am just concerned about safety a bit.
  16. I am 105kg but since I was diagnosed with exercise induced ashtma in my matric year when I only weighed 65kg I am pretty sure your weight has nothing to do it. Best advice is to see a doctor for a proper diagnose to check your lung capacity etc. I use a Berotec inhaler (2 pufffs about 30 before I ride) and I've never had any issues. Berotec used to be a subscription inhaler but over the last couple of years I buy it over the counter without prescription. Rather speak to a doctor and get an inhaler just to be on the safe side. I went on holiday once, forgot inhaler at home and went dancing one evening when I got sort of an asthma attack. There were no doctors, pharmacies, hospitals or anybody that could help and I suffered a pretty uncomfortable night. I was lucky that evening but rather be safe than sorry. I have never needed my inhaler on a ride but you will never catch me on a ride without it. Good luck!

    Cyclelab

Depending on which branch your going to. I've not always encountered the most knowledgeable staff at Cycle Lab but I do buy from then often. Their prices are really not that bad if you want something immediately and the closest one to my house is only about 2km's
  18. I am 1.86 and L for me was a better fit than XL. Also consider the type of riding you do. I found that the XL just felt too big on especially singletracks. In my opinion get the setup right on th L, the XL will not make you faster, may actually slow you down a bit if you rides with lots of sharp turns. And sorry bergman for hijacking your thread a bit but here goes: @ Jagwil. U r realy a idot. Insted of constintly poping up on threats giving evirybody ADVISE about theier speling y dont u raather contribuate to the topik at hand. We are not in skool anymoore and we dont come to the hub to compeate in a speling contesst. Hijack off
  19. +1 on using your road bike but if you really want to use mtb put on the slicks. Riding knobblies on a road race is just wrong! :-)
  20. Not sure if this has been posted yet but kudos to the trial builders at Big Red Barn. Some very nice new single tracks! I was there this morning and enjoyed every second!
  21. +1 on the Lezyne, they work really well!
  22. I am currently getting a ZTR Flow EX wheelset build with XT hubs. I have read a lot of threads on wheelsets before and the hopes and Chris Kings are always getting great reviews. I was considering the hopes but thanks to reading up some more decided they were too noisy for me. Just something to consider with whatever hubs you go for.
  23. Great going Greg Minnaar! Makes me really proud to be South African!
  24. @SkinnySweatyMan: huh? Is your post in response to my original post? I would have loved to get out some more but those doctors and nurses in hospital don't allow you to wonder off too much! :-)
  25. Hi all Thanks for all the good wishes, really appreciate it. @Fabes: No issues, to be quite honest I didn't even know about the like function until someone mentioned it earlier today.
