About Me

Started riding bikes in 1959.

Started fun racing while at school, with Gregory Kemp.

Had the privilege of training with Tony Impey, the Beneke brothers, The 'Idol" and the other greats of the 1970' s in south Joburg. Good days with a lot of sore muscles.

I loved long distance endurance.

Did my first ultra-ride in early 80's when I rode Jhb - Winklespruit - Durban in 27 hours to raise monies for a charity.

In 1986 I rode from Jhb to the town of Ritchie  (45km past Kimberley) in 19h45m to raise funds and clothing donations for the flood victims there.

Set my first non-stop 24 hour cycling track record at Hector Norris in 1981 in freezing winter. Only managed 465km.

Set my second non-stop 24hr record in 1986 in Durban. 605km despite bad crash that sidelined me for an hour (the expansion gap filler around the Cyril Geoghegan track was missing and my front wheel got trapped).

This record got smashed by an incedible cycling 'machine' in Cape Town some years later. The guy went over 750Km I think.

Set the non-stop, completely unassisted ride from Johannesburg to Durban beach front in 1987. 22h12m13s - used the N3 highway most of the time. At the time, the fully supported non-stop record was 19hours something. I tried to break that once but hit strong headwinds after van Reenens and abandoned after losing too much time.

Started and ran the Southern FreeWheelers Cycling Club in Rosettenville (Jhb).

Cycle toured (full pannier set) across the USA in 1984 - mostly solo. Then went over to ride around UK, France, a bit of Switzerland and into Spain after that. 17000km in 9 months.

Moved to Mtb in 1994 and never looked back.

Rode the 2009 Epic but abandoned on stage 6 due to kidney / blood pressure complications from the wrong pain killers. Essentially I had prepared poorly and caused a muscle tear which caused pain which caused the use of pain killers which caused............................... Just dumb preparation!
