I used cytomax years ago - its simply too sweet for my taste. If Cadence is like it then its not for me either. When you first taste Heed you think you got the mixture wrong as it is very very subtle.
Since Hammer are out of stock of Heed for the next month I need an alternative for shorter rides. Can anyone who's tried Heed and Cadence Energy comment on the sweetness of Cadence and what flavour to get? One of the main reasons I use Heed is its very subtle taste so if Cadence tastes like 'Energade' then its probably not for me.
They will traversing some of the winefarms in constantia - apparently coming out somewhere near the Nek.
Having done crossfit for about 10 months I've recently decided to stop. I've enjoyed it thoroughly but I'm finding it conflicts with cycling - especially if you increase your riding intensity/volume. Even after months of doing crossfit there are still sessions where my body is seriously fatigued for days.
At my box I have no control over what they've got planned for session (which is good - keeps things interesting) however it often meant I arrived Monday evening to do a sufferfest of squat type exercises which means doing intervals Tues/Wed very difficult.
My second issue with CF is that not everyone at CF is ever going to compete at the CF games.. If you only go to the box twice a week then there will be exercises/movements that you only get round to once a month. So trying to teach me to do a walking handstand is just a waste of time - I'll never master it and quite frankly have no ambitions to walk on my hands!
For variety and the "off" season its great but if you're on limited time then there is no substitute for the bike.
I'd be interested in hearing how some of the others that do crossfit fit it all in and how they structure their week.
Hi,
I'm considering a new IDT and see the CWC has the Bushido bluetooth at R10500 which seems like a good price.
From what I've read on this thread most you are pro the Powerbeam. The problems most of you mention are related to software/lock in etc. I'm not overly concerned about lock in and getting data out is not really a big deal for me since I've got a power meter which I'll continue to with my Garmin. I havent seen any comments on which IDT has a better "feel"? I havent ridden on any of these trainers so would appreciate some feedback. I currently use the first Cyclops Fluid - I've had it since 2005 and it hasnt given me a moments trouble. It doesnt however "feel" like the road.
thanks.
How does this compare to trans baviaans? Obviously longer, and hotter but what else?
Hi, are these new programs based on heart rate or power?
Just bought the lady in my life an Epic Expert 29r. She is 1.63 and rides a small. What handlebar widths do people out there ride. She has a Syntace Duraflite 640mm/8deg on her Scott Scale and it seems ok. The handlebar on the Epic is a 700mm. Do we go up to 700 or go down to the 640?
Your input is appreciated. Just add your riding style, height, handlebar width and back sweep on your comments so I could make an educated guess.
My personal choice is to stay with wide bars.. But its her bike.. When I upgraded my wife (medium frame, 170cm height) from a 26er Anthem to a 29er Anthem she found the bars too wide so I changed it out.
We've had some teammates ride with TT helmets last year. After nearly going mad from hearing your own thoughts for 6 hours they vowed to never do it again.

It looked like there were many more deep section wheels this year. How much of a difference does this really make?
Incredible stage today. The race village was a wet muddy mess still but most of the route dried out pretty well considering how wet it was yesterday. As soon as you got into the shade though it was very wet and slippery.
Started at the front again and a reasonably large group of about 5 teams formed. 2 solo riders set the pace for a while and between them, myself and my partner no one did any work at the front. Eventually the 2 solo riders made a break and we went with for as long as we could. We split away from the bunch though so we just worked on pulling a gap. The route was a mix of rolling hills and awesome single track.
We led as the first team for the rest of the stage catching one of the solo riders near the end.
The last 20km was very badly marked. The guys hadn't finished putting the boards up it seemed. With 1km to go we followed the lead motorbike on completely the wrong road for 3km. 2nd through to 4th did the same thing. We eventually turned around and headed for the finishing line to see that other teams had already finished. After leading the whole day and to loose like that was terrible. Race control corrected our times along with the other 3 teams that were directed the wrong way. So we got the stage win but to not cross the line first is a real bummer. We have the overall lead now as well. We lead by 57 seconds. Tomorrow we push again!
Ride the race next year - you'll have lots of people in front of you to show you the way!
Don't get me wrong, I love my garmins (I have a Forerunner 405 as well as Edge 500), however....
I'm onto my 3rd "broken" Forerunner 405... and 2nd Edge.
The edge "clip mechanism" on the back of the device broke... after reading and investigation on www it seams to be a common problem. Although Garmin's service is great.... I had to fork out R1200 for a new unit (for a known problem)
My first forerunner's battery packed up in 3 months... didn't hold charge. Got it replaced for free (under warrantee). 2nd forerunner had the same problem, but just outside warrentee period... cost... R1,200 for getting a new one.... now this one is doing the same and guess what... outside of warrentee period... costs, another R1, 200 for... guess what... replacing something with a known problem. Read on battery problems with Forerunner 405 on www and you get pages and pages... tried all the tips & tricks and it only works for a while...
So, the question is: why do you stick to something that's obviously flawed? Good question; all my years of information is on garmin's site, the tracking is great, the forerunner & edge are awesome devices!!! If ONLY garmin is willing to replace for free when it's a KNOWN problem I'll be punting garmin ALL THE WAY!!!
Hi, the quarter turn clip mechanism edges broke off yesterday when my Edge 500 popped out of one of those generic extendable holders.. (that will teach me!). I phoned the Jhb office and they won't give me an indication of how much to fix (even if I send them a photo). Did they replace yours for R1200 or was that the cost of replacing the back of the unit?
thanks.
Rather go with one of these - http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/santini-tempo-ls-jersey
time flies, I see next month david george will be halfway through his 'sporting interruption'
Didn't he get 2 years? Or like all other sentences in this country did it reduced?
Totally agree, I paid R11500 for a team for the first Epic I did and done another since, and will never do it again. Plenty better 'value for money' events out there at as much of a challenge and far nicer riding. But it is based on supply and demand and as long as people are willing to pay the price, the price will keep going up, so what is that doing for MTB in South Africa for the general population? Most stage races cost about R1250-R1500/day , but the epic feels it is comfortable charging double that, so you decide if its worth paying that amount to ride rocky jeep track and walk sandy dunes, so be it?
Next year I am going with 6-8 mates to ride across from Germany to Riva del Garda (same route as Trans Alps) and watch the Giro afterwards for less than it would cost for half an Epic entry, flights included, hotels, meals, etc included, go figure?
Are you doing this self guided or assisted?
They run an Alpe d'Huez time trial every week during summer which attracts hundreds of wanna-be's. The finishing point is however a few hundred meters short of where the Tour finishes (but there is not much climbing left). I rode this flat out and managed 53min. By comparison my flat out Tokai mast times are around 52-53 so this is probably the most comparable climb we have in the cape.
Guys there should be as much reflective material on there as possible. The colours dont really matter! As long as there is from that silver reflective tape all over the jacket you will be seem. I have on my jacket, a little on the rear stays and some on the back of my helmet, works like a bomb
If all your riding is done at night then colour doesn't matter and (assuming cars have their lights on) reflective material does. If you ride during the day then the reverse applies.
Hey guys I have a trail entry and am looking to swop for a race . Let me know if you keen
Please email Noelp@iafrica.com - they're looking to swop.
Not too sure I understand the point of this? Surely the money would be better spent building more trails?
Thanks. Much appreciated.
This will be my 6th Trans. I missed a few in the middle. My 1st one was an epic fail, we all need to have one to figure out what to do. And don't just search for the word "tip", allot has been said that did not include that word.
Ok perhaps I should rephrase my questions since I'm not looking for the bible on long distance cycling:
- Does anyone know where the major rivers/portages are so I can get an idea of where it makes sense to leave a clean pair of shorts.
- What food is provided by the organisers. The only mention of food I can find on their website is "Food and sustenance at checkpoints are free for cyclists only, support drivers are allowed to buy from the vendors."
Epic fail in the making...
How or why so?
I searched for "tip" within this thread and only found one.
A tip... get a buff to cover your mouth and nose. I ride with mine all the time. If you see a ninja on the bike, its me. It helps hugely to keep cold air out of the lungs and off your neck. And with that, I'm sure it helps avoid getting colds because you're not bombarding your lungs with icy air. Its pointless having all kinds of leg warmers, arm warmers, jackets, toe warmers etc etc etc, if your face is melting off and going numb from the cold. I've got a Merrell one, they sell them at NH for R100.

I don't think its excessive - guided rides are generally alot more expensive.
I've been looking of Strava for segments/routes but can't find much. I heard from someone that one of the farmers had been building a 30-40k route on the Morg's side. Does anyone know anything about this? Or can anyone point me to some maps as I'd like to avoid the dirt roads if possible.
