  1. Some of you guys were getting coconut oil in bulk right? Where from and what was the pricing? 1l containers aren't enough for me any more :/
  2. Yeah, I always ride with a high-vis vest on, and as others noted this happens during bright daylight (if I ride in dark I have front and rear blinkers). Checking the mirrors to see if there's a sprawled mass of wheels and legs lying in the gutter, yeah I guess it could be that. I've also wondered if it's the dimensions thing, because truly when you consider the size of some SUVs and the gender of drivers it seems miraculous there's any paintwork left on the cars. (sorry but it's well established that women generally have poor spatial reasoning abilities compared to men)
  3. The situation will be something like this: you're cycling along on the left of a regular suburban road. A car comes whooshing past with barely inches for a gap. It's hardly done passing you when it veers wide, often out into the oncoming lane, leaving a massively generous gap for a cyclist that is not there. WTF. Is it a big tease? "haha, look at the massive gap I could've left as I was passing you and that I will now maintain while passing no one"
  4. No I think you misunderstood. Those values are for a product and are per 100g of the product. So yeah if I were to consume 100g then I'd be consuming 50g "glycaemic carb". It's not my intention to consume that quantity daily. I've seen this kind of breakdown (glycaemic carbs/of which sugar) on various products so I'm trying to phrase this in a general sense. my question is which of the values should be considered towards daily carb intake. I guess to be safe I'll take the 50. Is the 10g difference not fibre?
  5. Interesting, what kind of car was it? and your ride, road or mtb? Were you both moving at the time?
  6. Help, I've become confused about something. If I have a food item whose label claims something like: Glycaemic carbohydrates: 50g of which total sugar: 40g Which number is the one to consider when calculating carbs for the day? and what's the difference in these values? what would the 10g difference consist of?
  7. You'll need something very high in saturated fat. Coconut oil is the only thing I can think of, other than rendered animal fat.
  8. Inspirational, thanks for posting. Would love to hear more of your experiences at the workshop.
  9. No kidding, this happened to me recently mid-way through a turn in a traffic circle. I'd put a bit more leg in the stroke because I knew the driver I'd just passed was antsy to move and then the pedal hit, rear wheel jumped and I almost lost it. Being friendly with drivers is nice but being friendly with people is awesome. It's amazing how quickly a seemingly unfriendly long face can break into a smile. What I don't enjoy so much is getting behind the 'indigent' commuters whose wheels are so out of true it's a miracle they can still rotate/one (or no) cables evident/broken or no pedals (just the axle)/general sad bike condition but they're still going. Makes my heart break but all I can do is be extra-appreciative of the life I lead. (I do carry a few spare bits around in case I can help someone out)
  10. For intense sustained physical activity I don't think anyone would dispute carbs are required. This 'study' of low-carb was using 200g of carb a day. That might be 'relatively' low, but it is nowhere near keto. So presumably all the study subjects were in fact not in ketosis. I have personally gained strength and added muscle on vlc/keto diet in the last year. He's talking about IF not keto? Seems legit, other than being on kids. 28 year old study compares high protein diet with high carb diet, not keto. Study concludes that dietary macronutrient content alters cortisol metabolism independently of body weight changes in obese men. okay, and? "Therefore, the study may overestimate the magnitude of effects that could be obtained by carbohydrate restriction in the context of a behavioral intervention"
  11. Regarding cortisol levels on keto: http://www.ketotic.o...ess-part-i.html Can you provide other links for your claims about keto and cortisol? (editL sorry only saw now that you did provide links. reading now) From search results it appears keto increases testosterone production, not decreases. I don't have time now to read more, but if you have some cites to back-up your assertion please post. Maybe you'd like to share your thoughts on how carb-rich diet affects serotonin (which in turn affects cortisol). http://ketopia.com/c...nd-carbs-oh-my/ http://archinte.jama...08558(Long-term Effects of a Very Low-Carbohydrate Diet and a Low-Fat Diet on Mood and Cognitive Function) tl;dnr: Topwine using bad science to try scare people off low carb (again)
  12. Two sets of these appeared on St Patrick's rd in Houghton at the end of last year. Nasty surprise if you're coming down that hill and don't know better. Sure you can slip through if you get the angle right, but get the angle a bit wrong... and if you're lucky it'll just be a hard jostle in the saddle. Absolutely hated those things when I rode a motorcycle, do not like them much better as a cyclist!
  13. Simple rule - look at the side mirrors and make sure you can see the driver's face - if you can't, he can't see you either.
  14. I understand the study and do not dispute that omega consumption has gone out of balance. But, they say themselves "Fats included shortening, butter, lard, margarine, and beef tallow." So why is shortening listed on its own? I see no mention of spice as an energy source in the article, please point that out for me?
  15. I recently purchased a new bike, a Giant Revel 1. Did not come with a single reflector. The other day I happened to notice the cheapo bikes at Checkers Hyper have reflectors. Should my bike have had? Is there any law regarding the sale of new bikes and reflectors?
  16. Spice is a significant energy source? and no sign of wheat? Why does it list shortening, fats and oils separately? List does not really make sense.
  17. I'm gonna be in the market for a new helmet shortly (old one is about 2.5 years old and looking it). I'm always disinclined to buy more expensive "branded" products, I don't believe that a nice brand name and matching price-tag means you're really getting a better product. But, you know, helmets are not really something to skimp on. Are the Raleigh/Probike type helmets found at hyper stores like Game or Checkers really any worse at protection than something that costs 2-3x the price at a bike shop? I honestly don't care about looks, aerodynamics etc.
  18. Quite so... for me it's nuts. There is no full feeling when I'm eating nuts, just the feeling of the bottom of the bag Also it took me way too long to stop viewing exercise as X calories out therefore requiring X calories in.
  19. Sorry yes that's 2-3 days of water only.
  20. Not necessarily, in some intersections where the taxis intend to turn right, they'll get in the turn lane and passengers disembark from there to weave through cars to get to the left side of the road. Super dangerous for the passengers, and any cyclists not aware. I lane split if there's no room on the left and I'm sure the traffic is not going to move faster than me.
  21. I fast for 2-3 days periodically, have done for years. Why... because I feel better at the end of it every time. Never weaker, never tired.
  22. I checked if there are comparable balls, and it's more a matter of material than shape/size. Lacrosse balls are a bouncy kind of rubber apparently, hockey balls not. btw that link was a random one off google to give an idea of the purpose, I don't give a rat's ass about LA.
  23. The kind used in the sport of lacrosse (stick and net). As I said, I have no intention of taking up the game but am curious to test its muscle-knot smoothing/relaxing powers. http://www.livestrong.com/article/548154-self-myofascial-release-techniques-using-a-lacrosse-ball/
  24. Damn, I was checking out Amazon now and I can't find any vendor that will ship to SA. FFS lacrosseballstore.com will ship... for almost USD50 on a $1.50 item
