I'm a big fan of dedicated devices - in my case I use a Garmin 500 with HRM. Works great. Mobile as backup (but as a general rule I try to preserve battery life).
In my opinion:
1. Buy the best, lightest bike you can afford.
2. Do a good bike fit (BGFit for me)
3. Ride your bike know how everything works
4. Do skills training courses and as much as you can afford (some are not cheap)
5. Ride, ride, ride ........
Good, I'm doing all 5.
Thanks all. Forgot to mention preferably Northern Suburbs...but Daniel is doing a clinic at Meerendal in March so perfect. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
New to MTBiking, started 5 weeks ago and have about 200km under the belt. Had my first big wipeout today...sharp corner, sandy, soft touch on brakes and wheels slid out...and lost plenty skin and incurred significant ego damage.
I like to approach new ventures technically, I'm going for a proper fit in two week's time. Was think of doing a skills clinic as well, any suggestions other than Tread for Cape Town area? I've asked Tread, but there doesn't seem to be any planned in foreseeable future in CPT area.
Thanks!
Grabs your attention doesn't it?
That is what could easily be the next topic here on the hub.
On may to work this morning and still dark outside I counted 7 cyclists with no lights on their bikes. Some even ignoring a very nice cycling path and riding on a very dicey stretch of road shared by trucks and cars.
If they get knocked over who is to blame? We all then start to rant and rave about motorists and the way they drive.
If you can afford the bike surely you can afford a light. If not wait until the sun is shining then go and train.
Ride in the dark with no lights and get knocked over or possibly even killed is not going to get you any sympathy from me. You deserved it.
Was having these exact thoughts this morning when I left for work at just before 6. Counted multiple riders on Visserhok Rd in Durbanville without any lights - frighteningly irresponsible.
Unfortunately I often see cyclists who apparently fail to grasp the basics of physics ---> weight of bike vs weight of car and consequences thereof. Right or no rights, just be clever about it.
Thanks, routed planned on Strava. Koeberg - Occultsdale - Malmesbury Rd (this is same is Klipheuwel Rd?) - 32.1km.
Thanks everyone, great info to digest - will be planning my route later today.
Hi there
New to cycling (MTB) and looking for some proper saddle time (40km-ish), not too hilly, and roads with shoulders in Durbanville area.
Looking at Wellington out to Spes Bona back via Koeberg, but that's only around 25km. Anyway to extend?
Would appreciate and advice/suggstions.
Thank you, I think you may be on the right track here! Guess a visit to my LBS is in order.
Yes, it's a Scott Scale 910.
Txs for the reply.
Hi there
/DISCLAIMER: I'm new to cycling and know very little...
Was hoping someone can help me, I did a race this weekend and close to the end my MTB started make a grinding sound, which I eventually identified as coming from the chain wheel.
There is a bolt/screw protruding from the frame and it is making contact with the chain when on the small chain ring. The screw has clearly taken some damage from the contact. Here are 2 photos that will hopefully help -
What am I looking at? What is wrong? How do I fix it?
Thanks!
"allows muscles to grow twice as fast"......if we talking about my calves, 2 x zero is still zero.
ROFL exactly what I was thinking of my calves when i read it
Not sure what size you're after but this looks very good to me: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/75461-cannondale-flash-1-carbon-xl/ 25k asking price.
Txs, but I'm symmetrically resistant to that one shock left thingy... :-)
TL : DR
Biking also has it emo moments it seems.
Thanks for all the input, much appreciated. Possibly my last question, I can pick up a brand new 2013 Scott Scale 910 for R26,900. Great looking bike and full XT specs?
What do think?
Sorry, the more I dig the more questions pop up...
Scale 910 is 2x10. Better for a beginner to rather go 3x10?

I just did this exercise for a friend of mine.
The two bikes in question were the Momsen SL729 & Silverback Storm.
Silverback is full XT whereas the Momsen was a mix and match of low level SRAM components.
Silverback won.
The Silverback Storm is a beautiful bike. Definitely on my radar as well.
The Momsen SL729 also has R and XT variants it seems, although info is scarce. Also, the one I looked at is R6-7k cheaper than the Storm so some of the SRAM X5/7/9 combination can be upgraded?
Going to check out a few LBS in Southern Suburbs this morning again.
It is a great bike!
I've got one, and never had a moment's problem. Fastest bike I've ever owned (11 bikes in 8 years).
Thanks for the feedback, reassuring to here postive comments.
for that price you must go Dual suspension!!!! your but is going to thank you later if you do.
This was probably the single hardest thing to decide about...I've changed my mind a couple of times. My thinking now is that, being completely new to cycling, that a hardtail would force me to focus on technique, control, picking lines etc? If the bug bites I can always upgrade later on.
Budget wise it of course also allows for better components, lighter frame.
Nice scott spark 910 on the hub.... Good value!!!
Looks good! From all I've read I would need a Large frame, but I should probably get a proper fit to be certain.
Buy what makes your belly button fizz when you ride it... Buy the one you want to keep in your bedroom cause you just need to look at it all the time and make sure it's ok...
Momsen it is for now then.
Add about 4k and get the carbon comp stumpjumper from Specialized. Youll never regret the decision.
Good looking bikes, I will have a look tomorrow at the Spes LBS.
Good prices and quite a few options at www.vbikes.co.za. Seems legit from other threads on The Hub...but prices seems almost too low?
Hi there
I'm looking at buying a first mountain bike. Mostly XC riding, perhaps a few 2-3 day events later on. Currently looking at hardtail for maximum R25k-ish budget. Not to fussed about alu vs carbon.
I've spent some time looking at bikes at different LBS' around me...and lots of internet research...pretty much overwhelmed at this point.
Couple of options at the moment, I really like the look of this bike -
Momsen SL729 -

...but there does to be quite a few stories about broken frames so I'm unsure.
Also looking at something like the Scott Scale 940.
Any advice, specific model I should perhaps look at, issues to avoid etc?
Thanks in advance!
Correct MTB setup for my body?

I went to Irma for a setup a few weeks back and she's good. Made quite a positive difference in my riding.
