  12. The beauty of South Africa is the diversity of the landscape, and the character of the small towns scattered across it. There is no more fitting way to experience it than by bicycle. The inaugural edition of the Road to Desolation gravel race started in the picturesque Karoo town Graaff-Reinet last year. Photographer, Simon Pocock was on hand to document it, and give us his perspective on this unique event. The Karoo is hard to explain. 15. With temperatures at the Attakwas Extreme predicted to be in the mid-forties this weekend, staying fuelled and hydrated is going to be key to a safe and successful ride. We had a quick phonecall with coach and Sport Performance specialist Prof Mike Posthumus to cover the key points on staying fuelled, hydrated and heat management. Here’s what he had to say: Carbohydrate Intake I am reluctant to give carbohydrate recommendations so close to a race because the strategy should be well practised, and individuals should have been training their gut. The general recommendation is 90 grams of carbohydrate per hour. […]

  16. During the Heritage Day floods of 25th September 2023, many of the mountain bike trails and bridges in the Elgin Valley, were totally destroyed. The good news is that these trails and bridges have been totally rebuilt and restored to their former glory – or even better! More good news is that if you are members of the Wine Lands Cycling Club (Regional) your permit allows you to ride on these trails. Likewise, if you are members of the Tygerberg Mtb Club, there is a minimal top-up option that gets you an annual Elgin Valley Trail permit. The Elgin Valley […]

  20. It’s with great excitement that we can confirm the postponed Bikes2Blossoms MTB event will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2024. The Heritage Day extreme storms wreaked havoc on most of the existing routes, and we had no choice but to postpone the 2023 edition. Since the flood damage, the community of Elgin started repairing and restoring bridges and trails to the extent that they’re now in even better condition than before. The amazing project was undertaken, and completed by a few key role players, including Pieter Silberbauer from Trail’s End Bike Hotel, and Rhys Hickson from Oak Valley. Together […]

  22. The Stanford 100 Miler has been on my hit list since it first popped up in the Events Calendar last year. Having experienced the magic of the Tanqua Kuru, I knew we’d be in for a treat with Jeremy Crowder at the helm, and the deceptive green rollers of the Overberg to contend with. The start venue was the Stanford Hills estate, nestled at the foot of the Klein River mountain range just outside the Stanford. Picture serene rolling green hills, fluffy clouds reflected in the farm dam, and panoramic views of the valley stretching away as far as the […]

  23. The Momentum Medical Scheme Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, celebrated its fifteenth anniversary in 2023. Over the decade and a half, the seven-day stage race took riders through the Klein Karoo and across the Garden Route. It traversed high mountains and fertile plains, challenging and rewarding by turns. It grew with the sport of mountain biking, maturing with 29ers into a mainstay of the South African cycling calendar. Yet one of the only constants in life is change. And 2024 is the year for change. For rebirth and reimagination. For regrowth and renewal. As such the race will become […]

  24. When I was presented with the opportunity to shoot a Trail Daze episode that included riding in a game reserve, among wildlife, I didn’t hesitate. There is something magical about the thought of sharing the soil with free roaming creatures. It’s a riding experience that isn’t available around every corner and certainly not back home in the Western Cape (as far as I am aware). We headed to a province not yet featured in Trail Daze – Limpopo. It is scenic, diverse, and rich in wildlife. Our destination was Summerplace Game Reserve, a 3,500 hectare family-owned guest farm just a […]
