  1. My immature mind read "last minute hookup" a different way, which made everything you said thereafter really funny. Maybe that was the point.
  2. Hahahaha good memory. Ya i still email David M now and then asking if he knows of anyone looking to get rid of theirs.
  3. Appreciated! Will chat to David. At this stage all I'm finding in QR is unbranded stuff that might be fine, but also I don't want to find out that it isn't fine at 70kph down franshoek pass.
  4. It may well look good, but another steel fork isn't an option. I sort of bought the bike as a do-it-all. With the curved steel fork I get a longer wheel base and can fit front panniers for touring. So I'm now looking at a racier carbon fork to join the roadies. The idea being swapping the 2 forks out gives me 2 bikes in one. (ps: looks like IS mount from here)
  5. I have the Rapide MT25 gravel wheelset so I think that is easily converted to thru-axle. So that could be an option, but then I'm left with needing flat mount brake calipers. I currently have a really nice (albeit old tech) set of yokozunas with post mount fittings. Which incidentally I think we spoke about on another thread! So for now I'll see if I have any luck finding a post mount QR fork. Otherwise I may go the 12mm route.
  6. Hi All, I recently picked up one of these frames second hand: https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m11b0s143p4590/SPA-CYCLES-Elan-725-Mk1-Frameset-(Quick-Release-Post-Mount-Calipers) It came with a curved steel "touring" style fork which I like, but I wouldn't mind getting a carbon fork for it. I'm currently running it with a QR wheelset and post mount disc brakes, so I'm looking for a post-mount QR carbon fork. Any idea where I can find one? There actually is one in the classifieds, but the steerer tube is a tiny bit short. Thanks in advance.
  7. Can confirm. Although I technically use Yokozuna (which I think are the same thing, just rebranded) on my bike. For me, in terms of feel they are 80% as good as true hydraulic brakes, with more adjustability and no bleeding needed. You just need a small chainsaw to cut the compression-less housing.
  8. Other way round I'd imagine.
  9. I've drifted this way too. I started on zwift, but didn't really enjoy the gamification of it all. My ideal scenario would be a separate screen to watch something on youtube while trainerroads just adjusts the program in the background. I balked when they increased the price though. So for now it's Rouvy which is the cheapest of the lot and feels a bit more laid back than zwfit.
  10. A chain wear checker is so much more than the name suggests. It's a BS detector too. If a seller says a bike is in great condition and but the .75% wear tooth is just falling straight through, you may as well walk away. And even if the seller has not said anything yet, the minute you bring the checker out of your pocket they start telling you everything that is wrong with the bike. Its R200 that saves you much more than that in the long term. I learnt this once the very expensive way and now never look at a second hand bike without one.
  11. Do we know this for sure? It may well turn out to be true, but at this stage all I've seen is a post by @varkie2 a few pages back saying "There are reports that a rider has passed away".
  12. Hammerhead users - how do you find the battery life? From all the reviews I've read people generally like it more than, say, the garmin 830, but the complaint is always battery life. Granted, these reviews often refer to the Karoo 2.
  13. Ya I'm sort of in this ecosystem too. To be fair, I've liked all of the Garmin stuff I've owned and most of it has worked very well. I have a Garmin Fenix 3 that I bought in 2016. While the straps have needed replacing, the body is indestructible. I've made very little effort to look after it and electronically I really can't fault it. But my 530 would occasionally provide very dubious elevation readings (it was not the result of a low pressure system). Essentially it just wouldn't pick up changes in elevation on some rides. I asked Garmin to take a look at it (it was still under warranty) and the best I got back was a badly worded email about 4 weeks later asking for proof of purchase. Correspondence was so slow thereafter that the warranty actually expired during that period.
  14. Early days but we seem to have a front runner. Thanks for the input.
  15. And Kate how do we say your surname? 😆
  16. I'm looking for a new bike computer after my Garmin 530 was stolen (along with the bike that was attached to it). I've been a garmin user for maybe 15 years or so now and for bike computers it was a no-brainer in the past. But recently I've found their after sales service to be really poor. By that I mean it is generally well-meaning, but always slow and very often incompetent. Also, I find the heart rate monitors (chest strap style) often stop working after a year or so. I generally don't keep up-to-date with this sort of tech so maybe there are now much better options and the market is more competitive. I do remember a little while ago people talking about the Hammerhead Karoo being a "Garmin killer" it was so good. https://www.hammerhead.io/products/karoo Then there's also Wahoo, Bryton and Polar that I'm aware of. I'm looking at a second hand garmin 830, but do people have other brand recommendations? It doesn't have to be touch screen (like the 830), but that's generally the product level I'm looking at. Thanks
  17. 29 more than me. So 29 then.
  18. Most (and most consecutive) sub-3's I believe.
  19. I don't think there was ever an apology and I wouldn't ever expect one personally. But I was happy to see a post that was very much "OK, you were right and I shouldn't have broken the rules." Unless it was some deep level trolling I didn't pick up on, it was a step in the right direction IMO.
  20. Correct on all counts. She took a pop at bikehub's senior ebike representative, @ChrisF and said she didn't get what the big deal was as normal bikes got to go fast so why can't she. Things escalated rapidly from there, things were said and counseling even was suggested, but to her infinite credit (I'm actually being serious here) in the end she conceded that she was wrong and should have followed the rules. Normally when one is irrefutably wrong about something and it's there in a written timeline for everyone to see (as is the nature of forums), people seem to just dig their heels in even further to avoid acknowledging defeat. So credit where it's due. I'm guessing she has since asked for her account to be deleted. You missed a real duzi though.
  21. Definitely. I enjoyed reading that. On a separate note, I don't know if it's the mileage I did leading into the CTCT that has left me with the testosterone levels of a 10yr old but some of the photos of Parent-Child tandems and people towing buggies for kids with disabilities leaves me with a serious lump in my throat. Anyways, I'm off to drink some whiskey, wrestle a mountain lion and listen to AC/DC.
  22. All good - my mistake. I had always assumed the 1-tonner was just some nickname for the 100 miler but just reading now I see they are separate events. @Bro Derek your main take away from this should be that there are in fact not 1 but 2 races where you can sit on the road side eating banana bread and still get in 1A.
  23. Is the 1 tonner the same as the Boland 100 Miler? In 2021 I actually took a 10 minute rest on the Boland 100 miler at the base of the last climb - DuToits kloof. I phoned home, ate some banana bread, chatted to the ladies at the drinks stand and then limped up the climb. I was dead on my legs. My average speed was around 28.5kph for the whole ride, but I went up Du Toits at 10kph max. That event was given a beta value of 1.30 and that ride alone was enough to get me seeded in 1A at the next CTCT (2022), with an index of about 22 IIRC. This year I gave the Winelands and 99er everything I had, finished with the front groups for both and managed to move my overall seeding index by 1 letter, from something like 35 to 31. Started this CTCT in 1D. So listen to this man 👆, and don't put all your eggs in the 99er and Winelands baskets. Rather do the boland 100 miler where you can eat banana bread on the side of the road for 10 minutes and still end up in 1A.
  24. Was going to say, seems like a straightforward thing to prove or disprove: https://results.finishtime.co.za/myresults.aspx?uid=35-5005-1-8037 Bliksem. That's impressive. I was in 1D and was making a concerted effort to stay with the front runners. I see from my splits that I was with them over Edinburg drive but not at Tokai. I do remember seeing a handful of guys ride off the front and bridge across to other riders on the descent down to Tokai. I didn't quite have the power for that and was in the red going up Edinburg drive anyway.
  25. Did you ever get a reply to this? I couldn't find one. Liesbeek is actually a bit more convenient for me, so just wondering if there is a safer option of the two (ie between liesbeek and main).
