  1. Is that both Front and Rear? I'm looking to get the best 'fit' front derailleur on my 29er MTB so could go either: SRAM X.9 Trigger sh*ters with an 09 XT front derailleur or XT Trigger Shifters with SRAM X.9 front derailleur (I obviously haven't mentioned the other comdinations X.9 to X.9 and XT to XT - they will obviously work)
  2. I believe that 29er MTB wheels are the same diameter as 700C (though obviously a wider 'section'. From a brief measurement, standard road bike 700C rims are about 17mm (inside to inside the rim) and a 29er wheel I measured (Bontrager) was about 23mm (inside to inside the rim). Question: Can you fit something like a slick 700 x 37C or 700 x 48C road tyre to a 29er MTB rim? (we did a quick 'trial fit', and it looked like a 37C tyre would fit fine).
  3. Kiwi (Wayne) - Can you please post the model numbers (and 'swing type') in terms of 'best fit'. Cheers, Dave.
  4. That could well be Jerrard - I bought his 29er Frame, he got the SS frame with the sliding dropouts as the replacement. If it is his, it's VERY light So far, for mine, I've got the On-One wheels and the RST forks (both that Kiwi - Planet-X sells), I'm putting a X.9 Front Derailleur on (Jerrard informs me that this gives the best clearance), KCNC SC Wing Stem and Flat Bars. the rest I'm deliberating on (a question of want vs cost vs 'bits' that I have!)
  5. Daemon, I've got the same frame (bought 2nd hand from Jerrard) and am stating to 'collect bits' and build mine. Please PM me with details of the 'build' components - which FD did you use? and any clearance problems? Looks a beauty. Cheers, Dave.
  6. I agree fully - my post was a bit 'tongue-in-cheek' I do have to laugh when people do it in the fun ride My wife was in her first 'race' (and we were on our mountain bikes - she only has a mountain bike and I rode mine, rather than my road bike, so that we both put in the same effort (though she does have 700c wheels on hers)). Long story short, we passed quite a lot of the people who pushed to the front (on their flash road bikes, with their equally flash gear) quite quickly The time is not so important to me, it was curiosity, the focus is on the 'fun' in the Fun Ride! PS - well done to the guys on the hand-cycles, and the guys helping them - I felt for them, they looked absolutely knackered at the end!levett2009-05-04 04:29:06
  7. Yes I guess it does (for the big boys) but for us who are never going to win I can't see it making a difference - but I guess it's the 'one rule' Now I know why some people feel that they can join the start group late, and push to the front as though they have more right start at the front than everyone else - it's all so that they can gain a minute or two on their time! I always wondered
  8. Cheers Guys - that explains it. I just did the 'fun ride' at the Tour Durban (with the 'domestic' boss - her first 'race') and she was nervous of the start - the group was very slow off the line, and we were close to the back, so that explains the 2 minutes. (the Garmin did accurately register my start and stop times, which I set as I crossed the lines) So the question is: If they can register your personal time as you cross the finish, why can't they use your personal time when you start? What would happen if you rode 'out of group' with a friend on, say, the 94.7 (you are allowed to start later than your start time, but not erlier.
  9. Has anyone else had discrepancies with their RaceTec/Winning Time published time and the time they believe they did? On the 94.7, Argus, and now Tour Durban, mine has been 2 to 4 minutes different. On the 94.7, I thought it was me (I was using a CatEye computer) but I've had the same with the Argus and the Tour Durban (where I've been using a Garmin Edge 705). I was very careful this weekend to start the Garmin as I passed over the start mat, and as I went over the finish mat (the 1st one on the finish line), and the RaceTec time is 2 minutes different. Do they use the 2nd finish mat for the timing? (they've told me that the 2nd set are only a backup). With my times, this is not very relevant in terms of 'make-or-break', but I'm a statistics freak, so this is more of an 'I'm curious' rather than a 'Rant n' Rave'. Cheers, Dave.
  10. Outsurance - roughly 10% of the bike cost per annum! So, 10k bike 1k per annum - 20k bike 2k per annum Slightly cheaper for road bikes than mountain bikes (I don't know why?) That's my experience of Outsurance quotes anyway!levett2009-04-30 02:41:05
  11. Bit of a thread hijack (but not much) Do any of the experts (that seems to be Rock and ngala24) know how 'Ebay purchases' are treated. I have a couple of Ebay purchases (new items) that are being sent directly here - How will these be treated - 1st Question I order stuff from Ebay (both new and used) in the UK and, generally bring it back here with me when I'm travelling, but I'm not headed back to the UK in the near future - If it get the family to 'consolidate' the stuff and send as one parcel (bike spares - both new and used), who would that be treated - 2nd Question
  12. This is part of the answer I got from Garmin when I asked about pairing multiple speed/cadence sensors to the same 705 (for different bikes) To switch profiles, with the 705 powered on, please press and hold MODE. You can then choose one of the three available bike profiles. levett2009-04-21 16:57:37
  13. Any idea where it is? It looks like Lake Ontario to me (home!)
  14. There also seems to be something strange with this 10sp/9sp mix - when using a DA 10sp cassette on a 9sp hub you hae to (I think from memory) use the 'spacer' that is included. That would mean that a 9sp hub/freewheel is longer than a 10sp. If I've got it right, it makes little sense to me.
  15. I had one of the BB cups come loose on my Giant Trance (Race Face Crank) and it was 'rubbing' on the drive side - could the same have happened to you?
  16. I'm getting Johan at Yellow Saddle Cycling to build me a set of wheels on Shimano SLX Hubs and DRC ST 17 Rims (apparently similar to Mavic Open Pro Rims) with 'double butted' spokes (whatever that means!) So we'll see how these go! Johan and I have (1/2 calculated, 1/2 guessed) that the increase in gearing over the 26" 1.6" slicks will be about 20%!
  17. Apart from JB's original post, this is the best post of the 21 pages!
  18. Just to keep this thread going - it's fascinating! <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> To start - I'm not South African, but am working here, as I have lived and worked in various parts of the world. I happen to be in contact with JB re wheels, and congratulated him (in private) rather than joining in here - but I can't stand it. The way people throw litter around here is disgusting! It's not just the rich, it's not just the poor, it is everyone (I've seen people throw McDonalds boxes out of their windows while eating in the McD carpark - and posted them back for them - on the basis that I could only assume that they dropped them by accident!). Sorry to insult you guys, but it would not happen in Europe or North <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Americaon> because someone like JB would tell the offender every time. How does change start? By small steps, and by example! And in our sport/recreation, it's not just GU sachets - have you seen how many tubes are discarded during the 94.7! We can't change the world (or South African attitudes overnight), but we can have a small influence! That?s what JB did, and good on him! We need more people who take a stand (it's not about the thoughtless dropping of a GU packet, it's a whole attitude, and we should set an example then maybe, just maybe, people will think twice. (or respect cyclists - now that's a concept!).levett2009-04-07 01:49:50
  19. I've found a thread re building a wheelset with MTB (Disc) Hubs and 700C rims. This is something I've been thinking of for 'the boss' to ride her MTB on the road. Her MTB runs discs, so that should not be a problem and, from a quick measurement, my 700C 25 road bike wheels seem to be a radii just less than 350mm - which seems like it would fit in her Scott. Next question - who, around Jo'burg, could build such a set of wheels for a reasonable price (I'd look for a set of wheels - without discs - to be around 2,500 or less).

  21. I, amongst others, have 2 pairs of First Ascent's - the first has Grey on the outside (as well as Black panels and a Blue Chamois - the Second (newer) seems to be a later version (all black on the outside) with a thicker Orange Chamois. I much prefer the original ones (Blue Chamois), but don't know whether it's just want I've got used to - I use these for both MTB and Road.
