  1. Last week I bought an old bike for commuting. It has very blue flats... Think it's got "V8" stamped on it. What I like is that I can put my feet down, get on it anytime I like (like taking the kids around the block/bread-and-milk-run). What I don't like is my toes are going numb(although that is most probably because I'm riding with my running shoes), and I cannot bunny hop. Still undecided...
  2. Was also my main concern before I started. But going through the City, even Scummyside, people are courteous, there are enough cars around. Fountains still makes my neck prickle though.
  3. The combined price of that hardware is probably worth more than my house. Mine is more like Rouxtjie's pic, but with my wife's old clunker, and no tablet...
  4. Getting my rigid tonight... can't wait!
  5. It's because you're Dutch that your patching skills aren't up to scratch yet... Cycling here will change that quickly
  6. My moermeter sal ook in die rooi wees. Best of all, she's probably telling everybody that will listen about the rude cyclist that snuck up on her.
  7. TIA - This Is Africa... That's why MTB... I've tried sealant in my road bike once, but all the sealant just spurted out at supersonic speed. Think tyre liners will help, but other people complain about the extra weight, and some had trouble where the liner pinched the tube. You could have been unlucky though, my experience of CT cycling is not much, but the roads are in far better nick than up here in "rural" Gauteng.
  8. Photos taken same day on a ride near Naboomspruit
  9. Any suggestions as to what I can do with my cold feet? Seriously, could only feel them once I got into a piping hot shower this morning.
  10. Almost barrelled into an idiot that pulled off the road in front of me, then opened his door right as I was passing him. And I forgot my undies.... And I only started feeling my feet again after the shower. Still had fun though
  11. I think start at least. You have a few more minutes daylight down there than what we have up here. Just remember your lights. At the start you'll probably not commute everyday, at least until you have a rhythm going.
  12. Beer doesn't care. Beer is always waiting for you to return home...
  13. I really wish I could stop doing this... Not quite bunny hopping the kerb.
  14. Quite a few tips near the start of this fred, but the gist is: Proper lights (back, front, side) Remember your undies and socks for work Remember your towel Spares pack should be stocked Planning is key Drivers/pedestrians on cells are douche It's fun.
  15. Where's this? CT? Jealous... No such luck for me. Gauteng town planners believe something like cyclists only exists elsewhere.
  16. About R400 (26 flippin Euro's) Seriously though, like V12Man said, I only really see this in a professional team's technical area. Just started today on a fresh set of knobblies, want to keep them like that.
  17. It is getting a bit daft. They know they have a problem, why is there nothing being done about it? I did read here somewhere that they want to develop GK into memorial/amusement/hotel park thing. Probably why nothing is being done? I pass there on my commute, really longing to skip work and bash through there every time...
  18. Did almost the same thing. Front wheel on, back not. The skin on my elbow still a bit see-through.
  19. http://rekordcenturion.co.za/79234/man-and-woman-brutally-assaulted/ Here we go again...
  20. Yup. Really had a go the other day at a dude driving a plumbers' bakkie. Looked me in the eyes, then decided to go anyway.
  21. At least they can hear you then....
  22. My beard is awesome...
  23. The spare tube has been lying in my bag for so long, the patches on it has started disintegrating. Lesson learned. A work buddy said he'll drive me to the LBS to get a new tube. In winter, do you do leg and arm warmers? Still a little new to the commuting business.
  24. Learnt that this morning. Hit a patch of glass in the dark, puncturing about 5 spots, tyre doesn't want to seal. Not quite sure how I'm getting home... Also, it's getting dark out in the morning. I was away for two weeks, all of a sudden it's still night-time when I have to start. Less cars though. I have two lights in front and a tail light. What do you guys do? Do you stop commuting some time? Or bad-ass it through?
