  1. I know I may be in Cape Town, But I can still get any product for you. It is cheaper than buying at Dis-Chem. Have a look at my thread on (For Sale), Cytomax, special on till end of November, dirt cheap. David
  2. There is two places that come to mind in Cape Town. Soloped in Bree street. Bernie may have a nice second hand bike as he trades in and then sells your old one. Or Bicycle Maintenance Centre , corner of Devon and Albert street Woodstock. Avron deals also in second hand bikes. The first is to look at the best quality frame, hear what I say. The frame is what is going to last any amount of years, the gears or brakes, pedals and wheels is what will be replaced at anytime from wear and tear. A good quality frame is a much better investment than a top end gear shifters and brakes, ie. the groupset. Today the frames may have carbon pieces on say the front fork or the rear supports. The gears start with two or three front blades on the crank, ie. the pedal. You can get anything upto 11 gears at the back. Always start small, say three in front on the crank, pedal and 7, 8 or 9 on the back. All bikes today can be around 10kg and costing anything from R3000 up. Once you have seen some bikes and have got an idea, go and do some homework. Check at what that bike would cost new, chat to people who have a bike like that. Do not always jump for the first offer you see. Ask some questions and talk to some other cyclist. Have fun shopping and enjoy the sport.
  3. First try and find one person in your home town to ride with. If in Cape Town go to Table View, Kyllami on Tuesday night 17h00. Wednesday can get a bit rough. If in JHB go to Midrand, Kyalami not sure on the days. There is basic hand signals, very important cummunication. Slowing down, puncture put one hand in the air, which direction you want to go left or right. Drink from bottle, put hand out to the side before picking up bottle. When returning bottle, first show bottle to the side then replace bottle. Always watching through the gaps three bikes in front of you, at no time do you turn around or try and see anything behind you. Stay focused on what is happenning in front of you. Potholes, glass, rubbish, needs to be avoided. Someone in front will pass the message down the line, ie. smacking of the bum once or twice on the side where the problem is. As well as when there may be a runner/ pedestrian approching or passing a slow rider. If you need to change position left or right. Put your hand out to your side indicating your move, wait for response or voice your intention. If you need to stop dead try and cummunicate as much as possible warning anyone behind you of the trouble. If you need to stop take out your one shoe from pedal before you come to standstill. Try and keep your gears in easy motion when stopping at robots for better momentum when you pull away. You may find it safer on one side of the group, left on to the grass. As you learn try and practice moving around but staying to the back of the group. It will be slower at the back but safer. Adjust your gears as to the surface, uphill flat downhill. You will find it easier keeping the legs loose, relaxing after a climb, by turnning the pedals gently on the down instead of just coasting or freewheeling. When approaching a climb, hill try and put yourself infront of the group. But staying to one side as most of the group will now suddenly start bunching. Getting in everyones way, the faster fitter people do not always slow down just because of the hill, thus causing a bit of congestion. If you had stayed at the back there is a big chance you would not manage to keep up with the group, thus starting in front gives you that chance to slip back as you get tired or can not manage. If you had stayed at the back you would have nowhere to go tothus you get left behind. Always go out to enjoy and safe cycling. cytomax2009-10-30 15:38:51
  4. Excuse me, Any club that wants my support, my membership, my advertising, my freindship. Better prove their weight in gold. I may have a little bit more experience today, than when I started cycling but I will still ride with anybody in my club. Be that person riding ( slowly PPA marshal Bernie or fast Robbie R.) sorry for the example Bernie. That person is also human and may just be having a bad day. But then some people do not understand this. cytomax2009-10-30 15:42:14
  5. Fortunately, I survived my first club ride. Similer story, Support vechile left me behind. Contacted the club and spoke to owner/ shop. Told me I was complaining for nothing. When they later saw my seeding , they said how could I expect to belong/ ride for the club? Well the amount of top riders, that have since left said club. Gave me my answer. I know belong to a club that knows my name and waits for anybody with problems. We ask the questions to help anybody on the morning. There is plenty of help from all, old members and new visitors. Simple solution is to try and find one friend in your home town. Start out with the basics. But we can all learn from our mistakes and others advice. Cheers cytomax2009-10-30 14:13:56
