  1. I've got a 520 paired with my iPhone 8, both on latest SW versions. Livetrack works as promised, starts automatically and for 99% of rides stays connected the whole ride, although now and again on a MTB ride it does disconnect if we go through areas with poor mobile signal. In December I got taken out by a taxi and the Garmin/iPhone combination informed my emergency contacts perfectly even though I was unconscious at the time. Grateful for that! It wasn't always like this - a couple of versions back of Garmin SW I found Livetrack unusable unless I manually started it for each ride.
  2. Anybody got any updates on the safety of cycling through Klapperkop lately? I'm looking at going through Saturday or Sunday morning, on-road only.
  3. Speak to Peter Häusler of Midrand Country Cyclists. They are based in Midrand (duh) and are very accommodating of newbies. mccycle@iafrica.com
  4. This is a bit of a Catch-22 - we try and allow late access to pens as we understand that with this size event traffic, parking, and other problems do happen on the best planned mornings, however this then gets abused by these few individuals who use this to get ahead of their group so that they can get to the front. But we will bear these comments in mind for next year, thanks.
  5. Sorry for that, I was using the pohone and battling with the interface. Myles, I did see your comment of "Pretty much anyone", I was just pointing out (maybe badly) who some of us are who can't do 80% for 30 mins. Which brings me to the point of Discovery's use of the 220-age formula for max HR. Firstly, if you go into the history of it, it does not have a very good basis - see http://www.cyclingfusion.com/pdf/220-Age-Origins-Problems.pdf for a good summary. Secondly, it is only an estimate - fitness level, gender, weight, health, medication, and lots of other factors all affect your max HR in addition to your age. Thirdly, it is only an estimate and has a margin of error, possibly as high as 10% (either way) according to some authors. A lot of people seem to feel that a better formula is 208 - 0.7*age. That being said I can see why Discovery would want to use a formula, it's simple and cheap. But it would be great if they allowed exceptions.
  6. Um,no. Not that easy for some of us on heart meds. The absolute highest I can go is 70% of age related max. This means all HR targets don't work for me. The best I can get on the new scheme is distance/speed targets or events.
  7. I see on the Team Discovery race calendar (https://www.discovery.co.za/portal/individual/vitality-team-vitality-race-calendar) that the CTCT MTB event is listed (with 50% cash back) but the main event (the CTCT itself) is not even on the list! This has got to be a mistake, skipping the biggest event on the non-pro calendar!
