  1. Hi Hubbers I am being given an old Kona Hahanna Race Light which I want to restore and convert to single speed. The fork is going to need some serious attention. Does anyone know where I could get the fork serviced in the Gauteng area without it costing a small fortune? Is it worth servicing or should I get a rigid replacement? The stanchions are in really good condition. As you can see from the photos someone did a really botch job of removing the decal on the fork leg. Does anyone have an idea of what model fork it is? I suspect it was a later addition as I think it came with a rigid fork. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Thanks for the feedback. Will call them later in the week. If I may ask what did your DJ bike cost you?
  3. Seriously where does one find new dirt jump bikes in SA? I mean in physical stock and not a case of take your money and wait ages for one on special order.
  4. At that price I would go for it. It is good frame and is well specced for the money. It even has a dropper post which is a really useful item and should be on every mountain bike. You will find the bike very confidence inspiring and it will open a whole new dimension of riding for you. It will definitely be very fun bike to ride and will bring you a whole lot of enjoyment. You will find yourself being able to ride trails you never thought possible. Merida is solid choice and has good backup in SA
  5. Thanks for the replies. I am going to give it a whirl as I found someone to commute with me.
  6. My concern exactly. Not too keen on a lovely ride becoming a lovely walk again.
  7. That is quite a commute. I can see why you only do it once a week. Do you see many other commuters along the Spruit?
  8. Hi There Are there any hubbers out there who use the Braamfontein Spruit for commuting? More specifically from Parkhurst and surrounds into Sandton Central. I am wanting to do this commute a couple times a week but concerned about safety so was hoping to find some others to join up with.
  9. There's always one clown who screws it up for everyone else.
  10. Is there anybody around that does re-builds of old RockShox forks in SA? Is it worth re-building these forks or better just to find a rigid replacement? I need to do a bit more research on exactly what year model the fork is. A friend was about to throw an old bike away that is pretty nice steel framed Kona.
  11. No problem. I have only ever ridden there alone and never felt unsafe. Of course just be cautious about where you ride. I am all too familiar with the risks of cycling in Gauteng having been bike-jacked there myself. That was one incident in a series that prompted our relocation to the Eastern Cape. I still actually work in Joburg and commute home over weekends. It is an area I have travelled to regularly since my parents retired there over a decade ago. Something else I forgot to mention is there is a very chilled "race" that takes place shortly after Christmas called the Kariega Classic. Very relaxed and laid back but beautiful route. One really nasty comb if you choose the Bulls route. Normally starts at Hennie le Roux's farm near Salem and ends near Kenton. Not sure if the starting point will be the same this year as it is gaining popularity (relatively speaking as I think there were about 120 of us last year). If you Google it or Crown River Safaris you should find all the detail. Worth doing. Route is around 50km.
  12. The options for trail riding are very limited. I only know of the community trails at Manly Flats on the Port Alfred to Grahamstown road. Worth driving up there for that and it is a great iniative. There are a lot district roads in the area that u can explore. The roads to and around Southwell are very popular. If u r up for a bit of challenge u ride all the way to Grahamstown. Beautiful ride with good climbs. The local paper, "Talk of the Town" included a pamphlet with all the routes in December last year so look out for that as they may do it again. If I can find the one from last year I will let u know. I have ridden extensivley in the area on my own and never felt unsafe. Of course if u have a fat bike the best riding to be had is on the pristine beachs.
