  1. I know this is a bike thread but wondering if anyone knew of a place in Joburg where you can get Garmin battery replacements? Specifically for a Garmin Fenix 3 (Not the HR). There are plenty of online tutorials but I'm hesitant to screw it up and not even sure where I'll get a battery. The watch is about 5 years old and the battery life is down to around 5 hours (from 12/13hours). As I'm not going to finish comrades in 5 hours I am hoping to be able to replace it hahaha. I know its an old watch but I also dont have the money to upgrade.
  2. Hello all I've recently moved to Scottburgh and looking to ride some trails/routes/roads whatever is available. I can see through Google that there are quite a few paid for trails but wondering if anyone knew of some free routes around the area? I'm a bit skint at the moment and until I get a job I am just looking for somewhere to ride thats not on the road! Thanks in advance!
  3. I had old shimano Sora shifters which were not shifting. The LBS said its better to replace them because most times you cant fix them successfully. Not wanting to spend money I took them home, opened up and watched a youtube vid on how to repair. Boom done and they worked great on a quick practice ride. The next week at the 947 they lasted 20km before failing totally. I rode the rest of the 947 on a single speed very low gear. Not a great day out. Luckily a very kind hubber gifted me his old Sora Shifters and have replaced them and they work great.
  4. Ive ridden the spruit from the Field and study (with the informal settlement) to the top of Delta every day for work for the last year and so far so good. The only danger I've had so far is some nasty falls trying to better my commute home record
  5. Bit late to this but have you done any weekday morning rides along the spruit yet? I'm thinking of commuting between delta park and the field and study and was just wondering how you have found the spruit in the morning?
  6. That camera must have had some exciting footage!
  7. I might see you there! Hoping to head out on Friday. The only rule I know is to stick to the one way route. I love that ride but it takes me ages (I'm on a road bike) so I also get overtaken all the time.
  8. Guys hitting 90km/h astound me. I am happy to never go that fast! I hit a cats eye (road bike) going 65 just after Kyalami and I thought my wheel would break in half, convinced I would have a puncture for sure but it was fine all the way to the end. But I never made it passed 65km/h again!
  9. What a fun day, first 947, first cycle race and first time riding outside suikerbos. Really impressed with the organising and the camaraderie amongst the riders, I'm hooked! I managed a 4:20 riding in the DD charity batch. Hoping that next year I can start earlier and break 4 hours. Forgot to add that Kyalami was a highlight, also enjoyed everyone making race car noises around the bends!
  10. Thanks! Will leave home super early, hopefully traffic plays along.
  11. Great stuff thanks! I'm pretty excited
  12. Some newbie advice please. This is my first 947 and my first cycle race of any kind. I'm starting in DD charity batch. The start sounds super confusing would someone mind explaining how it works please? I realize there are multiple batches of course but how everyone gets to the start in their group is a mystery to me. Thanks!
  13. Why is it not safe to park at this gate? Thievery? Is it a bit more secure at the old circus spot?
  14. I was there last thursday, I was given a notice to beware of vehicles as they were busy with animal capture. I guess this means even less game.
  15. I had a great ride on Sunday. First timer so it wasnt really great it was painful as hell! But overall I really enjoyed it. Saw some friendly riders out there but also some not so friendly ones. I overtook a couple on MTBs on a hill and gave a cheery (or what I thought was cheery) hello. I just got stared at and ignored. Was on the road a bit further up sorting out a mechanical and they both rode passed without saying a word. They just shared a laugh. Not sure what etiquette is on the road but I assumed it was like running when you greet each other? Doesnt really matter though it was a great day I'll be out there again!
  16. Great thanks!
  17. Another question I have, is the picnic area which is halfway around the course a safe place for families? My wife and very little kids want to come out for the day but I just dont know if its safe for them out there as its quite isolated. Yes I'm a bit paranoid hahaha!
  18. Probably a dumb question but how does riding SBR (one lap) compare to the 947? Obviously its much shorter but if you're able to ride SBR is the 947 doable? First timer here so I'm just interested to hear.
  19. I'm excited but scared. Does anyone know how safe the day visitors spot is half way around the course. I mean is it safe for the wife and little kids to spend the morning there by themselves? It is quite isolated so just wanted to check.
  20. Hahaha thanks yes I just learnt how to search a thread and found the answer! Thanks very much I will try get out there sometime!
  21. Hello all I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to ride at Suikerbosrand now. I know they were closed for a while. If I recall it used to open at 7:30am and cost about R40 for a day entry and you could cycle the loop road. I am keen to head out there sometime but dont want to go all that way to turn around again! Thanks!
