  1. Hi, Anyone got any experience or ideas for converting long pull calipers (v brakes on a giant escape) to something that works with drop bar (sora) shifters? Options: - find mini v brake calipers (cant find any locally)? - do some kind of cantilever caliper conversion? - magic and/or who needs brakes? Any advice welcome.
  2. Hi All , I've searched the sections but failed to hit on the subject of MTbike to e-bike conversion . If it has please post a redirect Link. So I 'have a Genius 2020 aluminium frame ...due to conflicting health issues it's getting difficult to get out on my regular Tokai Trails, up jeep track down singles. I see across the pond the guys are doing pretty decent conversions. Has anybody In SA "better still the Cape" sourced the conversion kit or necessary parts to do the conversion. I have seen locally we have Chilled Squirrel doing in house conversions. thanks Howard.
  3. Hi Bikehub family. Hoping you can help me with this question. Recently purchased an older 2001 De Rosa Vega Merak from a hubber here. Wanting to slowly upgrade it. List of decisions: - opt for lighter wheels - carbon WHY or those amazing Campy Shamal HPW 12 Titanium bits that used to come on colnagos from the same era: >> Installed and fitted the Shamals for now - carbon bits much later... - Carbon seatpost >> To Do - Convert current mixed older 105/Tiagra groupset set up for more moodern 105/Ultegra groupset >> To Do - Convert brake calipers from older 105 to Bontrager or WHY Direct mount brake calipers >> To Do. This is where I need your advice. Is it even possible? I mean I want to believe that the fork could be modified as it is aluminium, but... - would that mess up the structural integrity of the fork? - Thinking that direct mount calipers would put the fork and rear seat stays under new pressures but is that okay? - Can I drill into the fork (it is thick enough in surface area)? Seeking your help to understand what I should consider here, Thanks, Chris
  4. So my Google skills seems to be failing me and only able to get to a bike shop over the weekend... hoping for some solid BikeHub advice till then. Does anybody know of a way to fit standard AC Wide Lightning wheels (15x100) to a boost (15x110) fork? Can you convert the existing hub in some way or are there adapters available AND does anyone have experience with this / tried it?
  5. Anyone ever tried converting a 11 - 36 cluster to a 11 - 40 on a 2 X 10 drivetrain. I done a 1 X 10 with 11 - 42, works perfect. Looking for hillkill gear on my 2 X 10 now
  6. Hello Everyone. We in JHB. So me and my squeeze got new MTB's (29" and 27.5"). The salesman said 1st thing I should do is convert to tubeless, but I thought to myself agh I will just repair the punctures as I go. 1ST ride and 3 punctures later and I realised he is very wise. So Im getting myself and my squeeze the following: a pair of tubeless tires for the bikes(2 - 29x2.2 and 2 - 27.5x2.2)2x conversion kit (sealant, tape, valves)CO2 inflater head4x 25g co2 cartridgesgauge pump (small handheld)If I'm missing anything or need to change something please let me know? Labour is a bit expensive, so thought I would do it myself. Any1 have good guides that they tried themselves? Are there tools I need to do this? Note: I am very new so I won't know any abbreviations. Also, I did check the rims, they do support tubeless. I appreciate any wisdom of the Bikehub community, Thanks in advance
  7. Hey all, I'm looking to change frame and want to keep all my current components. The new frame, though, has a rear spacing of 142x12 mm while my current rear hub is 135x12 mm. I was wondering if any of you know of a conversion around that can solve my dilemma? It's a Nukeproof Generator rear hub 135x12 (converted from QR)
  8. I was wondering if it's possible to convert a back pedal brake to a freewheel. My son's 16 inch bike is fitted with a back pedal or coaster brake. I added a normal front caliper brake, but really want to get rid of the back pedal brake and add a caliper brake to the rear wheel. Is this possible? I took the hub apart and it looks like the one described in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNF38oB6IYk I suspect it's not possible - will need to get a freewheel hub, and that's going to be more than the value of the bike...
  9. Hi All. I'm thinking of converting my Santa Cruz Tallboy to thru axle at the back. it is currently quick release. Is there a conversion kit that you have to buy and where do you get it? Thanks, Alex
  10. I've been toying with the idea of going 1x10 on my 29er FS, so have now sat down and tried to figure our how/what can be done, I would like to make as few changes as possible to the bike.. My current set up is below, what I was thinking was removing the 13T from the cassette and adding one of these, http://www.wolftoothcycling.com/products/giant-cog-for-shimano or something similar. Then removing the smallest and biggest chainring (24T & 42T) and the front derailleur etc.. Will the standard chainring work? From what I have read while searching, my long cage rear derailleur wont need to be changed, but would I need to do anything to the length of the chain? Or anything else that I have not thought of? Rear Derailleur: SHIMANO XT LONG CAGE 10-SPEED Crankset: SHIMANO M552 42-32-24T BB: SHIMANO Cassette: SHIMANO SLX 11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,36T Chain: SHIMANO HG74 10 SPEED Thanks..
  11. Evening all :-) I wonder if anyone knows where I might get an adapter to convert a 15mm thru bolt to a 9mm Quick Release? Just got a 2nd hand wheel with at Specialized hub (not DT Swiss) which has a15mm thru adapter in it. I actually think the native size of the hub is 20mm see images. I have a Giant STP with Fox F80 shocks and have to use a 9mm Quick release which leaves me in a pickle :-P I'd really rather not replace the hub if I can help it. Thank you. Greg.
  12. So I was looking at the geometry of my full sus Giant anthem 26er and wondered "if I change the front fork and rear assemblage would a 650b conversion be possible? Anyone know if it'll work?
  13. I have a fs 26' carbon frame lying around and have been wondering if I could take it to a carbon frame repairer and extend an extra 2.5 cm at the skewer , that would make it be able to run a 650b wheel? Would this work?
  14. I am converting a roadie frame into a single speed commuter. I have been been given a Shimano MTB crankset for free. But now I am confused as to which BB to put on the bike. Do I put on a MTB BB and the put the spacers on the frame side? Or do I put on a road BB to fit the frame and then put the spacers on the crank side (outside) of the BB? Have I made a boobie by having to choose a BB? PS: if anyone knows where I can get a set of FREE road brake callipers you would rock a lot!
