  2. Would you want PPA to bring back the 12hours of Killarney?
  3. Not sure if it is the right place to ask this: Just curious to learn or find out anyone's thoughts and opinions with regarding 'Pedal Power Association'? Are they worth it to be a member of? Given their broad exposure, as well as their involvement with various trails all over the Western Cape, and the member benefits they offer (ie, discounts at various trails), is it worth it? Sometimes it is too much of a hassle to go to a specific trail, just to pay a lot of money to get a information bike board, and to ride there. Please understand it is not a flame topic or it intends to be. I also understand the reason behind trail fees as it is all for maintenance of trails. My gripe is just that there are so many bike clubs / organisations out there but with limited benefits.
  4. Please note that membership is R20 for juniors (born in 1996 and later) and R150 for seniors (born in 1995 and earlier). If a senior works they should not be joining PPA paying development fees but should be joining normally. If a senior is unemployed and cannot afford the membership fees the club will have to send a motivation as to why the person cannot pay. The above message was part of an email sent to all DEVELOPMENT CLUBS that PPA supports in terms of various rebates. This email contained an attachment that explains the criteria for 2014 -2015 season. Something is a miss in this shifting of the annual goal post strategy without any form of consultation and what I would like to gather are the opnions and thoughts from: "development club" members, from ordinary PPA mmembers (you dont belong to any club except the club" of PPA) and, from the cyclists that simiply dont subscribe to the PPA philosophy. When posting Please identify yourself as forming part of one of those 3 groups. This will form part of research to determine whether there are merits in continuing with the development club status as it is or whether CSA is maybe the better option to follow. Please bear in mind nothing is for FREE and PPA beenfits from having dvelopment clubs on their books. Let the dicussion begin....
  5. Entered the 2014 Tiletoria West Coast Express and noticed it is a little longer then normal, then had a look at the outriders website http://www.theoutriders.co.za/ and see its at a new venue and a new route. Have posted the event info below: ROUTE DESCRIPTION The 118km route follows the West Coast Road to the Yzerfontein turn off where a right turn takes cyclists through the town of Darling. Cyclists leave Darling via the R315 past Mamre. The 66 km route follows the West Coast Road to the Mamre’ turn off. (up the only hill on the course). Pedal through the outskirts of Mamre’ to meet up with the 118km km route in Atlantis. Both the 118km and 66km routes take a short cut through the Atlantis industrial area, and return via the “tree lined route” and onto Melkbosstrand Road. Turn right at the traffic light onto the Westcoast Road, and back to the finish in Duynefontein. The 26 km route heads South on the coastal road towards Big Bay. A left turn at the first circle in Big Bay takes cyclists back towards the West Coast Road, where cyclists turn left on to the West Coast Road and back to the finish in Duynefontein. THIS ROUTE WILL NOT BE TIMED! DIRECTIONS TO THE VENUE From the N1, take the Milnerton off-ramp onto Koeberg Road. Continue past Ysterplaat, through Milnerton, left into Racecourse Road past Milnerton Medi Clinic, and right at the traffic light (at Paddocks Shopping Mall) onto the West Coast Road. Follow the West Coast Road for +/- 20km to the 2nd traffic light in Melkbos. Turn left into Melkbosstrand Road and right into Otto Duplessis Drive. Follow the signs and marshals to one of the designated parking areas.

  8. Parents can teach their children to be safe cyclists by going out with them and leading by example. South African roads are public spaces and cyclists have the right to ride their bicycles on them, but riding a bicycle on public roads is a huge responsibility and it is vital that children are made aware of the rules of the road (visit our website www.pedalpower.org.za), as well as how to handle a bicycle in a safe and responsible way. After it was announced earlier this year that the OFM Classic was cancelled, a dedicated operation was launched to ensure that cyclists from primarily the Free State and surrounding areas will still be able to participate in a local event that can be used to seed them for the 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour. 12. Depending on where and when you ride and your vulnerability, you may be exposed to some risk of assault or robbery while cycling. The risk is often low but the impact on many people of an assault, robbery or other attack is massive. It can significantly reduce how much you use your bike and the stress-free enjoyment of riding when you do. Consequently, it is worth trying to minimise the risk of assault before it ever happens to you. Click here to view the article

When winter arrives, you might think that the bicycling season is over. But with a little knowledge and practice, winter riding can be highly rewarding, and commuting to work can be a significant timesaver as more people generally use their cars in winter and get stuck in peak hour traffic. 23. So having looked at the PPA newsletter this jumped out as interesting: If you liked the Coronation Double Century, you’ll love the new road event that we’re working on… The event will take place early in May, in a very scenic upcountry location. As is the case with the CDC, it will be a team-format event, with up to twelve riders per team. More information to follow soon… When they say up country, I hope they are talking, Cape Town's version of up country, as I do not think the WC is flooded for events in May!! Regardless, sounds like an event up our alley! Hopefully any suggestions posted here are read by PPA As per usual, a little self promotion slapped in there for good measure, and people love pictures
  24. The months of February and March generally see a congested road racing calendar across the country. 25. Winter is the time of year when the clocks go back and for those who commute to and from work, or cycle to stay fit after a long day at the office, soon find their sunlit ride is now darker or pitch black. When winter arrives, you might think that bicycling season is over. But with a little knowledge and practice, winter riding can be highly rewarding. New cycling equipment, better apparel and a growing awareness of the feasibility of wintertime riding has caused an increase in participation. Click here to view the article
