  1. Due to the fact that Cycling South Africa (CSA) is not in a position to contribute towards the travel costs of riders that have been selected to compete at at the UCI World MTB Champs in Cairns, Australia, the selected athletes are required to self-fund the trip. The Western Province Mountain Biking Commission (WPMTBC) has decided to contribute R30 000 towards the WC cyclists’ costs to attend the World Champs and are offering cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to contribute as well, and stand a chance to win a SRAM Eagle GX upgrade kit sponsored by Cape Cycle Systems.   4. This weekend will see the start of the 2015 season for the cross-country series of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano, in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic. The Nove Mesto event, awarded the title of best cross-country World Cup multiple times, is the fitting place to launch the 25th season of the cross-country World Cup series.   10. The location of the 1st round of the XCO Cup Series 2015 on 28 February is slam-bam in the middle of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. You’d be forgiven to think serious compromises were made to have this UCI Category 1 course in such a prime location, however at 4.7km and 170m total ascent and with some gnarly natural obstacles in place, the course is capable of delivering some big blows come race day.   20. Cross-country mountain biking or XCO (the acronym given to the Olympic discipline) has increased in popularity in South Africa and globally over the past few years. So much so, that famed South African artist, Jack Parow, even wrote a song about it, Eksie Ou. Poor attempts at humour aside, the growth of this particular cycling discipline can largely be attributed to its inclusion in the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996.
