Hi Guys

I need some advice please :)

I am currently riding a 172.5mm compact crank ,on a 52cm frame.

I ordered a new 172.5mm crank but was sent a 175mm crank , will this affect my set up etc ?

Sales guy said it will give me more leaverage ?

What is your experience and advice?

My take is small bike = 170mm cranks, medium bike = 172.5mm cranks, large bike = 175mm cranks.

Personally - unless you have freaky long legs - I feel you should get the 172.5mm - or even 170mm cranks.

If you want to keep them don't forget to drop your seat by 2.5mm so you keep the same effective leg extension.

umm not sure you wont notice, I had a 175 crank and changed to a 172.5 because the chop where I bought a compact crank gave it to me and I didn't notice till later and I had problems during my ride with knee pain. stoped and put the seat up a few mm or so knee pain magically goes away (and this was before I knew that I had a different crank length...)

As for the ride, I think I spin better, and I didn't notice a lack of leverage......

Thanks all

I said to the guy i have been riding a 172.5mm for 3 years , why would i want to change now ??

I said I want what I ordered , thank you.

The theory (which I've never really given much scientific consideration to) is that the faster you pedal the shorter crank you should get.

Track riders use ~165mm - some hill climbers use 180mm cranks.

Hmmmm it is an interesting subject - alas its a Friday and I'm beyind caring for the day :)

I'll ponder it on my ride home later...

I have 175mm cranks on my Large Singular Swift single speed MTB ;)

Your top tube is a specific length, and with your foot in the cleat your toes will miss the weel if you turn the steerer on a 172,5, but with the longer crank arm your toes might hit the wheel if you turn.

Might be fun to watch  ...not so much to experience though :o

I definitely wouldn't want to go for shorter than 175 on my single speeds either.. ;)

I'm glad u took it back and got the right length u ordered! As these bike shops think we a bunch of fools and they can sell us anything! That's why I have not been into a bike shop in two years now! I order everything on line.
