Cycling in the Fish River Canyon

Hi Hubbers

 

We are looking at spending 3 to 4 days in the Fish River Canyon over Easter

 

What MTB routes are there available? Where do I go for good , detailed information?

 

Has anyone recorded the routes on their Garmin?

you say one can ride in the canyon? would be really interesting, heat, boulders, sand, and not sure what level the river is either over easter

I've walked down there before and I don't think you wanna ride there. How will you get your bike down there in the first place? Leave your bike at home and just enjoy the canyon the way it is meant to be enjoyed. If you think you'll miss your bike that much, take little photies of it with you.

If you are staying at the resort, then you can ride the roads around the canyon - part of a game reserve, so check if you can ride first. Will be a good ride out of the canyon, and a fast finish....

Riding in the canyon not allowed/possible as far as I know, certainly not in the part controlled by Namibian Parks.

 

What is great, is to ride on the roads that run on the rim of the canyon especially near sunset. It is very beautiful and an awe inspiring place, much better taken in on foot or bike (as opposed to sitting in a car). Sundowners and a picnic on the rim is also great, so pack some. Don't forget your camera. Just to sit and watch the sun go down and the shadows and colours change is worth it. Depending on where you are based, remember that you will then have to cycle or drive back to your base in the dark. The nearest accommodation is 10km or so away at Namibian Parks' campsite at Hobas. Nightride ? Amazing place to do it.

 

Further south there are some private farms that have 4x4 tracks going into the canyon where it is shallower and less spectacular. You can try to get more info on riding there, but I cannot help you with details.
