Route 62 Cycle Touring

Came back from KKNK today via Route 62 and I am so doing a cycle tour on that route. Have not really decided on logistics or start - finish but its something I have to do.

 

Anybody done it and got some advice?

Road mostly but would like to throw in some gravel and dust for the adventure.

 

Saw a couple coming up Vyeboom and wanted to stop and chat but no place to pull over. They looked like foreigners as they exercised the touring etiquette of draping the host countries flag on their rear panniers.

 

Also read a blog about an American group that did Route 62 a few years back. Might even just copy their route.

did the "great western cape bike ride" a couple of years ago, started in george, up to oudshoorn and then some small towns along r62, about 80ks a day, we did tented accomodation supplied but literally all the towns had guesthouses available at very reasonable prices, I am thinking of doing it again privately sometime. sure if you google it you will find the detail. are you doing it supported or completely on your own?

I'm looking at either doing it solo or in a small group but with no backup. I think 80km is doable on the route without draining oneself. Biggest challenge is when as to avoid the heat (it was 31 in Robertson today) and the rain.
