Hi Guys,

 

So my mate and i went through to TEAK on Saturday and road the black route. I see they reversed it and I must say its pretty awesome. To me there are two major hills, technical and long.

 

Now, the first one you get is just after coming out of the single track and you see the famous water bridge on your left. You ride straight up a stepish hill and at the end you turn left, after that you cruise down hill and start climbing to me a meneer of a hill, steep and technical. I hit this hill hard and managed to get 3/4 up it, but my heart rate just went up and my legs where still fine. I actaully stopped because I thought my heart was going to pop.

 

Does this relate to stamina?

I generally think Im not an unfit man, but this hill showed me whose boss!

 

Any tips on training for this? Should I be doing more interval stuff?

if you want to train to do more short stints at high HR you must do more interval training in your anaerobic range (i.e. about 80% of your max heart rate). That means you must train in the zones where you don't mainly use fats as a fuel source, but mainly use glycogen an carbo's as a fuel source. You can only sustain training in these zones for a few minutes.

 

A training example: 10 min warm up, 4minutes at > 80% of your maxc heart rate, recover to 60% of your MHR. Hit 80% again for 4 minutes, recover. Do this 6 times. Cool down 10 minutes. This will teach your body not to build up lactate as quickly and give you higher efficiency at these levels.

Don't "hit it hard". Start the climb easier and slower. Build up to a comfortable level of pain and stay there. If you spike your heart rate at the bottom of the climb chances are it will not recover while you're still climbing. I can't climb for sh!t but it works for me.

Timing your climbing intensity/rate is important.

Start slowly, many say.

Be patient, some say.

 

Accelerate towards the end of the 2nd half of the hill - depending on the terrain.
