Won't be able to join you, but would like to know how one gets to this route up Backsberg. Is it accessible to anyone or do you have to get permission from landowner(s)? Is it an out-and-back route or does it continue over the hill and where does it come out? Lots of questions but would really appreciate the information, if possible.

I've done this route once, you enter at the farm Flenterskloof,(no permit needed as far as I know, well we did not have one and there was no signs that forbade entry), from the Simondium Rd. It is not too far from the Rupert & Rothschild farm. Carry on for about 2 km along the avenue of (bluegum?) trees, past some farm workers cattages and then turn right at the orchard and up via the forestry rd. Then it is about 45-50 mins up and up realy hard pedaling to get to almost the top. There is a sort of turn around area for the telkom trucks that services the various antennae on the mountain. If you manage to get there without putting a foot down, you would have done well. Leave your bike there and hike the 50m to the neck for a wonderful view right across the Cape Flats to Table Mountain, with views of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. We took the same road back. For those of you that drive on the N1, the turnaround point or intended target is the "nipple" on the north western shoulder of Simonsberg.

A great ride!

I will join you, but give me a month or so. 2011 has caused some damage that can only be repaired by time in the saddle.

Hi Actionman, I think this may be too late but the group is meeting at cape gate parking at 5:30, its an open group, I will not be riding though, kids parties have got in the way.

Its a proper climb, probably about a 60km ride with the backsberg climb included.

Actionman I will let you know next time we ride
