Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a trail bike. My understanding is that a trail bike is more robust and designed to get some more abuse than an XC ride is for. Got an XC and would like a machine to throw around a bit whilst still being able to climb and agile enough for quick tight single track.

any ideas?

I understand it as trail - 120mm and all-mountain - 140mm

For general relaxed riding around and stage races, the 120mm trail bike seems perfect ie. Giant Trance, Merida 120, GT Sensor

Then there's the 140mm bike, climbs slowly and steadily so it goes anywhere but enough travel to hit a rough decent fast and some jumps.

ie. Giant Reign, Mongoose Teocali, GT Force. This seems like the bike you are looking for.

Have a look on crc - Sunn bikes are on special, also obike.co.za and theres a Viper 140mm frame with Fox Rp2/3 on crc for under 5k, which you could build up. Classifides also have bikes but I would be wary, bikes like this take allot of abuse to check it out properly before you commit.

I also want to get a bike like this when I have a bit of spare cash. maybe near the end of the year

Category is not defined by amount of travel per se, but is made up by a couple of factors. Anyway...

The Best: Ibis Mojo Classic or the new SL-R

It is light enough to race, but strong enough to handle most AM riding. Certainly more than what the average guy will be able to throw at it. Don't be fooled by the fact that it has 140mm travel. ANY bike setup properly will be good for trail riding bar the weight and a good pedalling platform. Tick, and tick for the Mojo.

The In Between: Trek or Giant Trance X

Best value for money: Giant Trance X
