Hi there hubbers,

I wil be doing my first Transbaviaans this year and need some advice what "food" to take for this event.

Other than the normal you take with you on a ride what will be the best to have the support group carry with them during the race. After some time I really dont want anything sweet especially on a long ride.

Any advise would be appreciated.

I'm no expert, but have done some long rides before. My advice is to stick with normal food that you are used to. It will be a low intensity event, so your body will have enough time to break down almost any carbs and protiens. Make sure you eat both.

Anything from ham, tuna or chicken samies, pasta, kerrie en rys, boerie rolls etc. will be good in addition to the normal energy drinks, bananas and bars. Try to avoid anything too fatty and too rich, your ability to digest food decreases at elevated heartrate, and the last thing you want is a full stomach, burping up undigested food for 5 hours. I'd also get some cramp tablets and take along a few to take at maybe 4 hour intervals.

So, unless you're going for podium, pick a nice picknik basket of things that you would like, as long as it contains a mix of carbs, protein and sugar.

I only do 100-120km races. I get set packing with a peanut butter sandwich on low GI bread. Works for me but the wife is also a dietician so that helps...

She now has offices on top of Cycle Lab Fourways. PM me if you want details. If you're serious you can't beat professional help and I don't think she charges much because I still have a rather strict limit when it comes to cycling purchases...

I normally do the peanut butter and marmite sandwiches. Works well.

The above peanut butter sarmies with honey as an extra option work well for me.

Anothor option are small boiled potatoes with some salted butter and herbs of your choice added for flavour.
