So how do you come to the conclusion that the 500 & 800 are more road orientated?

They are designed as gps cycling computers, not specific to road or mtb. The 800 is an upgrade on the 705.

The quetion I posed was merely to point out that newer technology is available, why then go for the old 705?

The 500 seemed quite popular in the Epic also!

Well the Touch screen option is just simply unethical f you're riding through mud and grime and then have to use it on the screen.

Don't you think that makes it more road orientated?

The 500 is a smaller model and the of Garmin-Cervelo use them so yup, if a pro team uses them with the other options then they surely have good reasons. They used them for the previous 2 years as well.

The 705 is a bulkier unit with more padding, making it safer and, in my opinion, better suited to an mtb.

I chose the 500 because it is smaller and weighs less.

But that's just me.

I also understand that the 705 is older and doesn't have the same software as the new 500 and 800's.

No I don't think the touch screen makes the 800 more road orientated. As I said the 800 is an upgrade on the 705, which was traditionally seen as a mtb computer because of its mapping capabilities.

Sure who wants to mess up screen with muddy finger but really, how often does your 500 get so full of mud that you can't see a thing? Stop fiddling with your computer and ride your bike! ;)

The bulkieness of the 705 caused instability, it shook around and caused the mounts to break. Hence a smaller, lighter, newer upgrade the 800.

Reason why the pro's chooses the smaller lighter 500 is simply because the don't need the mapping functionality when following a lead car on closed roads, so no I don't think the 800 is meant for the road specifically.

Dude, read my previous reply again, you'll see two places where I said I don't agree with you, do you want me to say it one more time?

Oh, and the 800 touch screen still works with a screen protector on, and with Europe grade full finger winter gloves...
