Its also for stiffness ... the carbon is way stiffer and stronger than Alu ....

Check out this for a stealth machine - Peaty and Mr Minn are running the full carbon set up this weekend at Val di Sole

Check out the spacers under the fork crown and the long ass stem. That Steve Peat fella must be tall.

Oh My word that V10 is HOT.. Ya must be seriously light..

When GT first brought out the Fury in carbon they said they made the frame roughly the same weight but 10x stronger. Ali's weakness is at the welds. Where Carbon can be made up to 5/6mm thick where the strenth is needed and then tapered down. I think Carbon had a bad rep because it was used for the superlight top end race bikes, so they did use thin more vulnerable sidewalls, but in all fairness im sure far more ali bikes fail than carbon, and its pure perception that make us doubt it. I think what santacruz started doing was push the anvelope as far as strenth goes, but only after they learnt a great deal from the origional Blur LT and XC. The LT did not weigh much less aas the Ali version at all but before the nomad and the new V10carbon, SC said the blur LTC was the strongest bike they ever produced.

Anyway.. Im sure you knew most of this.. I like the advance of material technology being a product designer we all had fetish's about designing carbon goods when we studied 10 years ago, but it is still verymuch possible as it's getting more common and its not so mystical anymore...

Would love to own a Blur TRC though..

its not just about heing tall - remember that the Val Di Sole course is one of the steepest tracks on teh circuit ... the riders therefore use spacers either like peaty has done here - or use direct mount stem spacers to raise the bars to the desired height to suit the steepness of the track

Peaty has also been running a high setup cus of his hand which he broke a whle back and has been racing with ... so its to relieve stress in the hand during his run!

cant see from work, but will definitely check it up later. Seems it was made by ENVE. You just know it's going to be a super product. Played around with their DH and XC bars the other day. superb products.

Wait what? How wide and how much are the DH bars?

Posted (edited)

800mm, 23mm rise, about R2000. Might get one

But first need to find a bank with loose security.. <_<

edit: fixed the width and rise values.

Dude. we get BONED in SA. An Ipad costs R4500 in Lagos. I think it's around 8k back home. we get done. No lube. all the time.

Yeah there were BIG strength test issues - BUT bear in mind that the GT LOBO Thermoplastic came out in 1998/1999 and had a bonded carbonfibre/thermoplastic frame

So the idea has been around for more than 10 years - but no one got the strengths right - UNTIL NOW

I had a thermo plastic lobo, it is and was the best bike i ever owned. i snaped it though, but not the carbon. an aluminium lug tore out of the frame. I must say i fell in a couple of rock gardens and not one ding or splinter. Thermo plastic is tough and the carbon is way strong. At the end of the day the technology was to expensive. as more producers stepped into the market it became more econoical. on pink bike they visited santacruz and did the "HIT THE POLE WITH THE FRAME" test and let me tel you, the carbon is much stronger. GO carbon.!!!!!!!!
