Yeah JasonW, I saw those frames are really light. Re: the tires, I use to ride light weight tyres when I started out but they combind with my riding style did not match, I very rarly finished a race cuz the tyres would simply not last till the end, so I don't skimp on tyres now, I'd rather finish the race than not at all.

My GF just got some AC hubs for her wheel, looking good! One day when my all DT SWiss wheelset gives in I'd also got your route.

I bought my frame loose over eBay for $550 about a year ago. Here is how it looked like' date=' stock, back in 2002. Mine then just has the electric blue SID on, with black AM classic wheels.

When you buy on eBay, do you get charged customs duty here in SA?

You need to be carefull with published bike weights and real world bike weights.  The published numbers are generally not for ridable bikes, especially the choice of tyres & stans, bar ends etc.  I suspect that the quoted weight of the new scalple of 8.5kg is not real world achievable.

The Scalpel of 8.5kg is the Team Scalpel Ultimate. This weight is achievable. They even use carbon chain blades! This will however not be for our mere mortals!LOL

ok another question... carbon mtb? wise?

IMO "flexstay" is a bit of a marketing gimmick. If you want comfort then get a DS. If you want pain and/or you are a podium contender then get a HT.

Again IMO there is little point in getting a HT unless you make a living out of racing!

Amoryn is already a podium contender! She does this on a Scalpel! What else?Wink She does not need a hardtail to achieve these results! LOL

For the Scalpel I paid R192 to get it from the Post Office. Usually the sellers 'cook' the declarations a little... Wink Yeah I know it isn't right, but I'm more concerned about my own pocket than customs' pocket...

The Scalpel being a Soft tail and the Santa Cruz being a DS bike you can't really compare the frame weights just like you can't compare any of the two Frames with a HT.

Just which these dame sites will stop publishing BS info...

whats the differnece between a soft tail and a DS bike

I'd say a soft tail has less than 2.5" travel, if you want to get technical about it. Another way would be the general lack of pivots. Look at the Trek STP.
