One factor will be how you well you look after your chain.

That is excactly right.

 

My Xt cluster lasted me almost 4 years. all training, races and one epic included. How can this be you would ask ?

 

its simple. I clean my cluster after every ride, change my chain and lube every time. (i ride with 2 chains and swop them after every ride)

 

also make sure you measure your chains often. as soon as it goes out of regulation, change it.

I also have a XX groupset, due to the high cost to replace the cluster I change the chain every 800km, also don't do more than 2 rides before I clean the chain and re-lube.
