Only when you start to feel that you are comfortable on your bike and have good reasons for why you want to upgrade certain components on the bike, then get the upgrades. I had always been a roadie and wanted to get into mountain biking as well so I looked into the same 29er vs 26er debate (which is very heated) and ended up going with a 26er. I road both and found each wheel size has its own advantages and disadvantages, it depends on the race or riding you doing, but the 26er was more versatile. I think many guys have come to the conclusion that having two bikes is best and I'm sure the bike manufacturers push this idea as well. I still see the pros on TV riding both and they make both go fast so don't worry to much about which bike you end up going with. 95 perecnt comes down to the rider and his/her ability.
