Hey guys!

I am thinking of getting a bike rack.  Money is an issue, and with my car not having a tow bar, I am considering a strap on.

Would you advise me against this?  One of my cycling buddies said he'd rather take the bike apart each time!

Is strap on bike racks really so unreliable?

Thanx!

I've had a strap on carrier of 12 years now and no problem carrying the bike. BUT, I do have a ding in my boot lid where it rests on. Mine is a no-name brand one. Maybe the Thules are better.

I'd never admit to having a strap on - or a ding in my boot-lid for that matter.

Thats what happens when you get a cheap or wrong size "strap on"...LOL

I use a Thule "Clip On" bike rack. I avoid strap ons...

It almost stays on permanently. No problems with scratching because I use short pieces of tyre liners to protect the boot where the rack clips on.

You can take your bike apart every time, but then you risk of scratching something else inside the car or soling the upholstery with grime. No easy answer, IMHO.
