I opted for the Holdfast setup. 2 Top Runners mounted on the roof-rack which in turn is fitted to the trailer with their Gutter Extrusions kit. Works like a charm especially since you don't have take off the wheels on each bicycle. You realise the value of this after a long tiring ride with beer goggles setting in from some cold ones at the finish.

I carry 4 full size mountain bikes without a problem and the whole jobby can be removed in minutes from the trailer. I got the entire setup from Cyclehouse in Pretoria. Speak to Anton he'll give you a good deal.

Hi Woolf, how much did this set you back. I am in the market for a trailer bike carrier as well. I have the Thule ball clip carrier, so with the trailer hooked i managed to add another ball to the back of the trailer, but soon came to realise that the trailer bounces to much at the back. Not worth the risk though.

My cruiser has a long shaft for the ball hook, i might be able to put the extra ball between the cruiser and the venter, but then i will have to be carefull when turning as the wheels of the bicyccles and the trailer might connect. I had to leave my mtds at home and havent been training for two weeks because of these issues.

Did the following for my 1300km trip to the coast. Three MTB directly behind vehicle, so wind drag is less. Raised ball with drop plate for bike carrier. Removed nose cone from Venter and fitted extra ball on extension. No problem with turn circle. Loaded trailer in such a way that there is approximately 15kg weight on coupler. Enough space between carrier and trailer for trailer to move both left-right and up (as when going through ditch). Did not feel the extra stuff behind the vehicle and averaged fuel consumption of 8.7l/100km (11 hour trip). Return trip the same.

Hi Bar Hugger,

It makes sense to remove the cone of the venter. OT: whAt car do you drive? This is good consumption for the bikes and a venter.
