Does anybody have or know somebody who has a Continuous Glucose Monitor (probably used in conjunction with an insulin pump)?

I would like to make contact to find out where/how they got it, and whether the costs (purchase and ongoing) were/are covered by medical aid.

Thanks.

Thanks, Peter. How did you manage to get it approved by Discovery? Did your daughter need special motivation from her physician, or did a Medtronic rep prepare and present the case? May I PM you?

My wife is also on classic comprehensive and has the medtronic cgm and pump. AFAIK the rep arranged everything for her. I know she had to upgrade to comprehensive to get the cgm + pump approved. She's been on the cgm for about a year, I can put you in contact with her if you need. It's definitely made diabetes management a whole lot clearer.

Protip: If you're close to groote schuur at the UCT hospital they have a diabetes management program which you can join via discovery for assistance in management; Also, you get your monthly insulin and glucometer testing strips (Not the medtronic stuff though) from them.

Hey

Drop my mate Darol Howse a mail. He is a diabetic and runs an organisation called diabetes adventure. He has completed 2 epics, several paddling races and now runs a race called the lesotho sky race. He has done a lot of researh into continous blood glucose monitoring and is a great inspiration. Pm me for his email and I will pass them on.

Contact Paul via his blog below - he is a cyclist too.

My training partner just started using cgm and a pump - still early days on the learning curve - if you want to contact him, let me know your details via pm, and I will put you in touch. As far as I know, Discovery paid for the pump, but do not pay for the cgm ongoing expense - about 2k a month, he funds that himself.

There is also a fair amount of information about the pumps and cgm here:
