I've argued about this situation a few times with a lot of people.

I told them that if you jump before the ropes, catch the ball behind the ropes, and throw the ball back before you hit the ground, then it's a catch (without someone catching the ball infield).

 

I don't know the exact rule, but it's only a catch when you have the ball under full control. A lot of players catch the ball and immediately throws the ball in the air. It's a catch because the argument is you have the ball under control if you can throw it in the air.

What is the difference in this situation?

remember gibbs got a catch turned down by doing that very same thing against australia. he caught it an immediately discarded it to the side - result - no catch. I also noticed that for every one of kallis' 6 catches he caught the other day, he recaught the throw into the air - just in case....

Gibbs DROPPED the ball in the attempt to discard it. Steve Waughs now-famous words to him: "Son, you just dropped the World Cup..."

 

BTW, I think Clarke's catch this weekend was pretty darn special (the 2nd one - was it Zaheer?). Not easy with the keeper making a neusance of himself as well!
