DIY frame building

Hey all

I am looking into building my own mtb frame out of steel. Does anyone know where I can get cromoly steel tubing in SA, preferably Cape Town. Also anyone built there own frame before? Advice and pics would be cool!

You will have to import the tubing.There was a a guy by the name of Donald from Produx bikes,building frames in CT.Maybe he can give you some advise.

only way is to import the steel. look at getting a kit from http://www.henryjames.com/ you may may to build a lugged frame (nothing wrong with this at all, plenty mtb's built with lugs) unless of course you got a tig welder.

Hey.

UP builds their Baja car using this stuff, so will ask them tomorrow. You do know that some of the profiles need to be heated before you can weld them and there are special courses and stuff you have to do to be able to weld them... it also can only be welded to itself as far as I know.

I guess what I'm saying is good luck and would love to see the results.

Did you ever come right finding Cro-moly tubing?

 

Also, General Question. how thick are most cro-mo tubes on heavy hitting Hardtails (i.e. Dirt jump bikes)
