Remember that the GR does not include accomodation (unless you went for the premium package). Also, the distance and ellevation on my Garmin for the W2W is different to what you have in the comparison. The terrain in Knysna was smoother and I found the W2W tougher this year than last years GR.

Also looks like you used R2400 per person for the GR, which is not what I paid, was more this year.

Great race, you will enjoy it.

Hi Chain-L

We entered for the GR300 2012 and it's R4,800/team as per my invoice so R2,400 is correct(what a bargain!), they've also sent us 3 emails with the *NEW* updated routes for each day which is a bit longer and more climbs totaling between 295 and 300km against last years route which was about 260km I think....? The GR doesn't include accommodation but does include 3 meals/day which is the same as the rest but good point. So I think Janneman's info is quite accurate on this one....

You are correct, checked my records as well and the entry was R2400. I actually enjoy staying in a guesthouse vs a tent for some races. Makes it feel more like holiday vs work in a tent. See you all there!

We decided to stay in the area from the 23rd and then going straight from there to the Argus. Nice 2 week recovery/holiday.

The Buffels bay caravan park is rated one of the best caravan parks in the country if someone is interested.....

Would also be nice to see the Isuzu 3 Towers compared too, although day 3 is quite short. Think it will top the value/km ranking though.

Good work Janneman72.

Hi KnobbyMech

I've added the Isuzu 3 Towers as requested, it seems that the GR300 is still a bit cheaper but the 3 Towers is only about R10/km which is less than the Cape Pioneer. Please see revised graph.

Nice addition to the whole thing, thanks for the suggestion!

Ciao,

Jannneman

Cost per kilo essentially means nothing - cost per hour of riding time would make more sense. A ride where it takes the winners 5 hours to do 70kms is going to have to provide more backup services (I would hope) than a ride where the winners do 70km in 3 hours.

These graphs look like an actuary's way of reducing a person's life down to a set of numbers - the essence and spirit that make each event is stripped away. I hope no-one chooses which event to do based solely on these graphs.

I disagree with you and I think this graph is actually very nicely laid out. Cost per kilo is the only constant whereas cost per hour means absolute nothing as everyone's riding time will differ but they will receive the same support, number of water points, goodie bags, breakfast, lunches & dinners etc which is the cost that the organiser must spend on each rider, almost like cost to company is now cost to rider. So looking at the graph if you don't have a million dollars means that the Garden route & Cape Pioneer you get the most bang for your bucks. You also know that how hard you must train for the W2W if you've done the Sani as the climbs are more or less the same but you know that you must train a bit harder for the Garden route.

It's not reducing a person's life down to a set of numbers but rather comparing apples with apples on a financial & fitness level however MTB'ing will remain an experience on its own with each stage race, I agree.Everybody complains that the Sani and Epic is over-commercialized and therefore very expensive, now you can actually see that with the graphs confirming the arguement. Another thing is that paying R22/km or R30/km on a bicycle you must pedal on your own is much more that any car you drive and that excludes your wear and tear on the bike.

Thanks Janneman, I think your effort and thought into this is very valuable.
