Would you buy this?

I am currently in the states and will return to sunny South Africa at the end of this month.

When I return I aim to buy a Giant Anthem x2 but would only be able to afford a second hand one at around R15000.

What do you fellow Hubbers think of this deal:

It is a brand new bike and with shipping to South Africa costs only $1850 which is even less than R15000.

Thank you in advance for any comments and opinions.

Hey Darrel

That's a great bike. A mate of mine bought his for close to R20k new in 2010 and loves it. This doesn't seem a bad deal but I think you should shop around a bit more. There's a number of better deals in that price range. I understand it's going to be a 'second hand vs new' decision but have a look at some of the following ads...

Hope this doesnt add anymore confusion to your decision - just trying to show you there's quite a few good deals out there. R15000 for a 2010 model machine seems a bit much to me. That said the Giant is a great bike.

Good luck.

Great bike! I bought exact same one a few weeks ago on the hub for R10500! Bargain! You can't go wrong with Giant - happy shopping!!

It may not end up as cheap as you think. Don't forget Customs VAT that you will have to pay over before you can take delivery calculated at 14% of the cost plus 10% upliftment charge.

Basically, add 15% to your purchase price.

If it were me making the choice I would still spend the most I could afford on a better speced or newer model bike. I'm also not saying that its not a great choice either, cause it's a great bike as others have said. You won't be totally unhappy but in a years time you may be thinking I should have gone 10 speed.

Good luck with whatever you deceide

The import tax on a complete bike or components that can be deemed as to make up a complete bike is not 14% VAT plus the 10% of the VAT as for spares, make sure what it is before you bring it in, a figure of 40% import tax comes to mind but I am not sure of that. CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY...... it can be found on the internet

As eccentric says - duties on full new bikes (or even a consignment of separate parts that can conceivably make up a whole bike) attract a duty of 40% - before VAT. So make sure the price you're quoted takes the import duties into account before you buy and get a nasty surprize courtesy of SARS & customs.
