Numb fingers

Recommended Posts

Hi

Everytime I go riding my left hand goes numb. I thought it might be the fact that I hold on too tight with it because it is my dominating hand but its not that. At the moment my ring finger and pinkie is still numb after a ride that ended about 16 hours ago. I have altered the height of the handlebar and the width. What can cause this?

Can be caused by excessive pressure on wrist, effected possibly by:

Weak core / lower back

Set up / position on the bike needing adjustment

BTW, many body parts hurt and ache after several hours in the saddle, to varying degrees.

Good luck!

Try tilting your seat more backward. Might be that its too far forward and your hands are taking the pressure of your body sliding forward due to the slope of the seat.

I have back problems so it might be part of my numbness. I have always had a bit of a problem with my left hand, feels awkward lifting it above my head, etc.

The body is so fascinating.

Only your left hand numbs out.

Surely, an orthopedic specialist or very good set up specialist could explain.

And its only my pinky that stays numb. Will have it checked out, I think this comes from a hockey incident a few years back.

Thanx

I had exactly the same thing after a 17 hour Desert Dash and it took a week to go away. Luckily no permanent damage.

It is some or other kind of tunnel syndrome. If you google it, you'll get a lot of info.

Bar ends and an expert bike set-up solved my problem. I'm not talking about a R100 bike shop bike set-up. I spent the money on an ErgoFit set-up (it solved my knee problems as well).

What I used to do is that I lost my form on the bike as I started to fatigue. Therefore, putting pressure on my hands because I was supporting my wieght with my arms. I used to struggle with numb and sore hands a lot. I now focus more on my form - relaxed shoulders, elbows facing down and only a light grip (using your core to support your weight) - and I haven't had any pain or numbness since.
