I'm thinking of buying a Mavic Crossmax wheelset form CRC....

- Have you ordered a wheelset from them before ?

- How to the package it ?

- Whats the Duties on a wheelset ordered online ?

- Do you think I can ask them to put UST tyres on them and send it as a whole?

Cheers

Dont think they allow you to order Mavic products to a place that's outside the EU. Probably some agreement they have with Mavic. Anyway thats how it was the last time I checked.

However if it is a custom built wheelset then that may be a different story. Best to contact them via email they take around 2 days to respond.

Yes I had a custom wheelset built up for the MTB Tandem by them. They were shipped in sturdy carboard containers. You pay shipping, free shipping over a certain amount so ad some spares, tool and other goodies you always wanted. No import duties on cycling spares, and tools. Search the Hub there are many discussions on this. You only pay 14% VAT plus 10% of the VAT on delivery. Phone them directly and ask about the UST fitting. It will be the quickest and does not cost an arm and leg.

With the cost of labour in the UK, probably worth you fitting the UST's yourself...It costs about GBP50 (labour only) at most bikeshops (I am not kidding). They won't ship Mavic to SA.

Be very sure you get the correct axle diameter, I know of someone who got that wrong a while ago and could do nothing witht the wheels...

I've had 4 wheelsets from them in all over the years. The parcels is likely to be more than R3000 so no shipping fee, they send via Parcel Force in the manufacters own sturdy box. only Vat to pay this end

I've bought both custom and pre-built wheels from CRC.

Custom - Had to Wait an extra 7 working days for the build, but build quality was top notch. They charge more for the labour on the build than locally, but their spoke prices are far cheaper so in total it works out cheaper. (on my wheels approx R200 a set cheaper than a local build). Secaond time thouhg I just ordered the parts for the wheelset and paid the R200 extra becasue I didn't feel like waiting for an extra week.

Pre-built - Went this route as they were well priced and no additional waiting time.

EDIT: Answers to your questions.

1. Yes (as indicatd above)

2. On both custom and pre-built wheels they box them in wheel boxes with bubble wrap. If you order custom wheels and other parts they may package other parts in the wheel box. But the wheel is adequately protected.

3. No duty on wheels (classified as parts). VAT is applicable though. Ranges from 13-15.4% depending on how hungover the customs officer is.

4. As everyone else stated... fit the tyres yourself.

Can vouch on what Patches said. Had a 36 spoke wheelset built on DMC Revolver disk hubs with Sun Ringle Mammoth rims. Well built and I have never touched them since 2007 when we lived and used them in Mozambique and later in Angola.

No Mavic via CRC to SA.

You can select whatever wheels parts you want shopping as usual, add them to your basket and when you check out stipulate "build please". The cost is 15 quid for one or 20 quid for two wheels.

You'll pay normal listed price plus an additional approximate 15.6% landed (VAT and clearance)

Hi CyclingJan.

We are going to have some stunning specials on wheels including Mavic at the Argus Expo. Prices that you will not be able to get again. This will only be for the duration of the expo.

Thanks patches , I will take it all into consideration - Pro's and Con's (Crc vs Local - Price and quality etc.)
