Hi everyone

just got a Silverback surplus 3 carbon MTB as a present. have been riding an GT avalanche 1.0 with Shimano LX set. Very happy with it!

The new bike has SRAM X-7 with grip shift. I'm really struggling to get use to it and thinking to swop and go for XTR shifters and XT deraillor.

Im I making a mistake? Dont really know SRAM very well!!

Help!

Try to go XT 2012 10speed if your budget allows it - excellent!

YOU EITHER LIKE GRIP SHIFT OR YOU DONT. I HAVE USED X0 GRIP SHIFT FOR OVER 4 YEARS AND FIND IT TO BE VERY GOOD WHEN RACING. YOU CAN DUMP OR GAIN GEARS WITH ONE QUICK SHIFT IN SITUATIONS SUCH AS STEEP RISES ON BLIND CORNERS, RATHER THAN CLICKING AWAY WITH THUMB OR FOREFINGER. ITS LIGHTER TOO THAN TRIGGER SHIFTERS IF THATS IMPORTANT TO YOU.

ALSO IF YOU ARE A TALL PERSON, CLIMBING STEEP STUFF OUT OF THE SADDLE CAN GET YOUR KNEES BUMPING ON THE TRIGGERS.

XTR IS A BIG JUMP UP COST WISE, X-7 EQUATES ROUGHLY TO SHIMANO SLX. (X-9 TO XT, X0 TO XTR, XX - ?)

BUT GO WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY, ITS ABOUT HAVING FUN ISNT IT?

To be honest, and I'm a gripshift fan, the X7 shifters are not the best. First upgrade just the shifters and see how you get along. XO Gripshift is a lot crisper, not as snotty when it's wet.

I picked up a pair of X0 Gripshifts for the tandem at CWC for about R500 last week. Been riding gripshift for the last 3 years and have only once had any shifting problems (a very wet Knysna 200 last year).

Build my bike July 2010 with XO...had to set gears once since then and that's only cause my outer got ripped. Try that with Shi(t)mano.

Looks like I have the X-O shifters! But the X-7 der, probably change that then huh?

Must be something else. None of those should give you shifting issues. Have them set again - could just be cable stretch.

The rankings are:

Shimano

XTR Yumeya - Don't know if they have this for the 10sp XTR yet.

XTR - 900 series

Saint - 800 series

XT - 700 series

LX/SLX - 600 series

Deore - 500 series

Acera - 400 Series

Don't bother series

And as far as comparison goes:

XX is better than/equal to XTR (depends on who you speak to)

X0 is between XT and XTR

X9 also between XT and XTR

X7 is between SLX and XT

X5 and Deore are both rather entry level and should not be considered as an 'upgrade' option

And Saint... there's nothing like it
