I think I know the answer to this already. The 11-25 cassette that came with my Ultegra is fine for most rides, but I do want a slightly easier gear for endurance (read long audax) and hillier events.

There's an 11-28 Ultegra cassette, but for this kind of ride I don't really need the 11, and would happily sacrifice the 28 for a 27 to keep fewer gaps in the smaller cogs.

I think my options for a 12-27 seem to be:

  • pay up for Dura-Ace,
  • go SRAM
  • I think I may be able to go cheaper/heavier with perhaps 105 or Tiagra
  • maybe source a less common make (like KCNC or IRD) from the UK - albeit some of these are more pricey than DA even.

Anyone know of any options I haven't uncovered?

That 28 is going to make you go nowhere slowly - don't do it man.

I struggle to pedal 39 - 26 when cruising up hills. I feel the power to effect ratio is completely out. My quads burn and I go nowhere. If you go bigger, even less efficient.

Just my 2c

Oh, for options you haven't covered - ride more, get stronger.

To quote the MIA Headhunter - HTFU. Miss that man!

Haha - fair comment, thanks!

Maybe I'll wait and see how my legs feel after the first 300, 400 and 600s on the 11-25. I guess if I'm struggling to spin, as you say the other option is get down the gym and HTFU

I used to have 25-12 with std crank and then went to a compact and back to a std crank

I put a 28-11 on as Insurance most time while training I never use 28 so effectively running 24-11

but in the odd race when the cadence is higher and your're a bit more amped when you hit Ou Kaaps after 60 odd kays its always nice to recharge the legs spinning them out and then back to 24

Personally if your struggle with a 25-11 then I would say you are wasting your legs running down at 12 and 13 except on the downhills, work on the legspeed, go compact for a while did wonders for me, otherwise 28-11

I hardly use 28 and seldom use 11 so basically running 24-12

believe me the diffs between 28-11 and dura-ace 27-12 not worth it get the Ultegra it will be well worth it

rather work on the leg speed and learn to enjoy climbs the more you do it the more you enjoy it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Already swapped over to a compact crank and enjoy it a lot. As per chat with Kris, I think I'll see how I get on with the stock 11-25 and then decide. It's not so much a steep hill on a normal weekend 100km that bothers me - it's how that same hill looks towards the end of a 300km+ audax ride. Have read quite a few reports from guys saying that's when they find a 27 or 28 cog useful to keep very tired legs moving even though that hill would have them on a 25 or smaller for a normal ride.
