Help with fitting a master link Please

Hi uys, i'm new to ridin and have a question to ask!

 

One link on my chain somehow got damaged preventing it from moving freely. I removed the damaged link and bought a 8 speed master link(my bike is 8 speed). My problem is that my master link is the same width as the two links i'm trying to join, hence not allowing the master link to fit. The only way I will get it to fit would be if I were to remove 2 more links allowing me to connect 2 narrower links to one another. But If i do that my chain will be a bit shorter... Is that he right thing to do or am I being retarded?
