Anine Posted March 17, 2012 Share Hi All I bought new handlebars which is much thicker in diameter than my old set. Unfortunately, I found out (after I wrestled the grips off!) that this means the screws which clamps the stem onto handlebar is much too short. I'm talking a good 2-3cm too short. The stem is an older 40mm scott which has 4 hex-type screws. Can I get longer screws somewhere?
deanbean Posted March 18, 2012 Share Not a good Idea.Rather buy a compatible stem. You will be exerting a crushing force on the handlebar and more than likely cause it to fail.
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted March 18, 2012 Share What deanbean said. Either take the bars back and get a replacement set, or get a new stem. They're 2 different size standards and are not to be interchanged.

Thomo Posted March 19, 2012 Share Yip, sounds like a 31.8mm bar and a 25.4mm stem.
