Darn it - sounds like an awesome ride. I'd be there like a bear if family and I weren't already booked away that long weekend. I wonder if they'd notice if I slipped away for a few hours ;)

@Mads - how about we put this route on the "from Paarl" training circuits, sounds like a beaut!

Edit - meant to say add this route to training circuit

Yes I agree

Just a quick note - 23-25 is not "slow" for this route, esp for those who haven't done it yet. (Edit: and by that I'm not saying no nothing about anybody specifically - just saying, it takes some trapping to even get to a 23 ave, esp if the wind does not play along on the day.)

And do ride carefully (and keep it single-file?) up Bains, since I see the plan is to that last. And with a 7 start, that means it'll be busy on that narrow piece of road by the time you/we arrive.

(Oh, and I am very tentative on this one - still not sure what the w/e plans are...)

Useful tips - thanks SeaBea.

That does indeed sound quite a fast pace given the nice big climbs through those two passes - I reckon if/when the "Hub B / social team" get to ride this route we may well take it at a little more ... well .... social pace. Would be very interested how everyone finds the route, especially Bains - I remember that road is pretty narrow and carries quite a few cars.

@Fandacious posted a nice "long" variation on this route also for later on in DC training when distances need to step up:

Although his target of 27km/h was even tougher!

Oh, I thought this was for the "social team" - and then noted the pace later, which is where the "warning" came from - esp since some people indicating they're inexperienced.

We often do it the other way around to get past that problem, thus getting Bains out the way early. Can be fun at the Slanghoek section if the SE is rearing it's head, though... :whistling: But hey, good training if the wind's like it was this year when you turned left at Robertson! But then again, we've been blown to bits on the way to Slanghoek turnoff from DuToit's side 1st as well...

Cheers SeaBee - my bad post wording. Ride was already planned by some of the other faster guys in a separate thread I think for the long weekend after easter. My suggestion was for the social team to include the route as one of our training circuit rides as @Mads is Paarl based.

23-25km/h avg is not that unrealistic. We did the same ride in December, and I managed it with an 26km/h avg without too much hassle.

do you think i can make it i dont know that ride

No problem. Only difficult sections is the climb over Du Toits and Bains. We'll take it slow at the back. Base training.

You guys will be fine on this ride. Besides the crew are good at looking after one another anyway. Stronger guys do the work up front and the riders needing more practise get to wheelsuck. I did this in December with completely dead legs after just starting a running program and the crew waited for me at the top of all the climbs and certainly did not hammer on the flats keeping me at breaking point. I imagine this ride will be even more relaxed.

My "partner in crime" in covering the rear. Was a lekker chilled ride up Bains (was quietly thanking those "dead legs" of yours, gave me good excuse to sandbag a bit :D )

BASE TRAINING RIDE ON SATURDAY 28 APRIL

Paarl - du Toitskloof Pass - Bainskloof Pass - Wellington

121 km

1800 m+ ascent

23 - 25 km/h avg.

DQ for any big blade moves. ^_^

Wheels roll at 07h00 from Paarl Mall parking lot.

Bring food and tech spares as there is merely a tuck shop along the way.

Bring arm warmers and/or gilet as it can be chilly in the early AM shadow of the Drakenstein Mountains.

For clarification, this is a ride that I originally broadcasted on the D Ville Roadies ride.

It is intended for riders who has some base training in their legs.

The route can be an unrealistic challenge if you haven't trained close to that total ascent and distance in the last road season.

If the 'HubSA' team wants to join this ride, feel free.

If there are riders with heavier legs on the day, then a 2nd slower bunch can form so no rider is isolated.

It is a beautiful route.

@Wannabe: agreed. Like I said in my previous post, I misunderstood the group doing the ride.

Uhm, nothing stops them from doing it. They might just ride a bit faster, or the other group a bit slower.

Did not want to hijack your ride, just thought that seeing that they are planning a ride on the same day, starting at the same place, it could be combined. Like you said, a faster group and a slower group.
