Wanting to upgrade and local bike shop has:

  1. 2012 Silverback Vida 3 29er @ R7900
  2. 2011 Raleigh Nomad (26") @ R5900

Both bikes are brand new, the Nomad supposedly has better gear changers (SRX), but is last year's model hence the price drop.

Are these good prices (both bikes?)

I'm 1.84m and currently on a bog standard Schwinn Mesa L which is too small for me.

And at 44 starting to feel those bumpy downhills, so was leaning towards the smoother 29er, but like the spec and PRICE of the Nomad.

Thoughts from those that are experienced and knowledgeable pleeeeez??

Not sure of all the specs, but considering the massive flock towards 29ers, I would stick with the Silverback. I very much doubt that the shifters are going to male much of a difference anyway.

Also check out the new Axis range, you will probably get a decent 29er for a little less. www.axis-bikes.com

Axis is basically the new name for Raleigh/Nomad.

I have the Nomad 30 - nice entry-level bike. Having said that, if I had to pick again, I would probably go 29'e - I'm more comfortable on my mate's XTC.

Also, what size can you get the Nomad in? It has a relatively short toptube. I'm 1.78m and according to my ErgoFit I should have gone for the large.

Thnx TheDee - I can get the Nomad in 21", so should be big enough for me?

Hear what you say about the 29er tho..........am leaning that way myself.

I see RRP for the SIlverback is about the R9k mark, and for the Axis is R7.9k, so it seems the Silverback is a good deal ? Or am I missing something?
