I've set my cell (android) to auto-reject private numbers :) Suddenly I get no "No, I am not selling something" phone calls any more.

My problem is that a number of people who I actually do want to speak to have numbers that route through switchboards or international exchanges that make them show up as a private number.

I just dont answer Private Numbers. If its important they can leave a message and I'll decide if I want to call back.

Yip!

Same thing here, but these calls just phone and hang up when you answer.

The reason you get a hangup is the end user is just confirming the number works, and potentially what you sound like (white male/black female/afrikaans/english/sotho) they then sell the number onto someone who'll phone you in the next couple of days to sell you something

Real numbers are worth quite a bit if you have a big list of them. Add some metadata and they're worth even more.

This is pretty much it. They have an automatic dialler that goes through a whole list of randomly generated numbers to find out which ones are valid. They can then sell that database.

Until they introduce the CPA's national do-not-call database, there's not much you can do.

Carmichael, you'll probably find that in a few weeks time you'll start getting a lot of actual marketing calls.
