Current ST BB 73/113 to fit 68/113

Hey all

 

Apologies if the question has been asked before but I cant find anything that matches the answer i am looking for.

 

I have a Merida TFS400(2010) and the BB has started making a grinding noise so I would like to replace it but only to learn that the shell is 73 and arent freely available anymore as they are mostly 68. I can get a new 68/113 but obviously a bit concerned that I will have issues with spacing when fitting.

 

Any advise you could give on wheter or not it will be possible to put a 68/113 in and if there would be other tweaks required ? Or if that isnt possible suggestions or conversions i can do to remedy the issue.

Try a different bike shop. 68/113 square taper (I assume?) BBs are pretty easy to find.

Tried about 7 different shops in CT an none have unfortunately. The 73/113 that is

Dont you just buy the 68 BB and not fit the spacers on the 73? All the BB's I have bought so far had the option to fit both types and on the little instruction leaflet they showed you how to fit it to 68mmm or 73mm Edit, are you talking about an External BB or the one with the taper Sqaure? wasnt the left side cup just wider on the old 68mm? cos then you could use the old plastic cup with a new 68mm bb.

Ill have to go check some manuals somewhere but ya its not ideal.

Are you sure you cant get 78mm? sounds bit mad to me cos there are loads of bikes out there with that size and they cant all upgrade to external bb's.

Sorry, misread - seems you're looking for a 73/113. Still shouldn't be too hard to find though, where are you based?

I had a bike shop tell me that 73mm isn't a standard anymore. Had to explain to him the spacers on an external BB works.

 

Also had a "salesman" at a popular Tygervalley store tell me that because I had a through axle I wouldn't be able to get 650B wheels for it and the ones he had there on show (I would have to order them anyway) wouldn't work at all because they are QR (They were HOPE hubs!!!!!!, ie interchangeable)

The one I currently have is http://www.chainreac...x?ModelID=34652. Regarding the spacers mentioned by Niner on the 68 I am not sure if you can or not but perhaps the answer would be to get one anyway and try it unless someone knows better as to whether or not i will be wasting my time.

 

I am based in CT and most of the bike shops told me that they will have to order the part in which is fine but concerned as to how long it will be before the next one starts grinding and i need a replacement and stuck with the same situation.

 

Regarding Flowta response... That is almost verbatim what i was told by a few known bike shops around CT with this not being standard anymore.
